1. Read Bob Katz book.
2. Read lots here and at PSW
3. Dont focus so much on tools thinking that is the ticket because it isn't.
4. Try to get an internship.
5. Realize that hard facts that mastering takes many many years of experience.

Hire an engineer to help you to either build a room or to treat the room your in .. to make it as good as possible before you do any of the above.

Hell no, man. This is FUN.
And......you'll learn a whole lot about the front end of production (making tunes and capturing them) by learning a bit about massaging and polishing them at the end.

Just don't expect miracles. It takes years and ears, not to mention a more than slight investment in your listening environment.

You can't make a silk purse out of a sow's ear.....and you probably can't get a platinum release out of Unclenny's Mastering Bedroom.

Compare your mastering to commmercial mixes that you like.
Even use a frequency analyser if you dont 100% trust your ears.

Good luck!

Is it just me, (probably) or are others totally freaked out by how many times people's
advice regarding mastering includes the phrase "use a frequency analyzer?"
I hope you mean the analyzers found stuck to both sides of your head.

Focus on what you do best and do that. If you want to truly get into mastering, you might find yourself making less beats....not that it is a bad thing....just dont expect to be great at everything.

If you don't know your room and its limitations and treat it with that in mind...dont master in it.

Read up on acoustics, and get an internship if you can...you"ll learn more there in a month that you will figuring things out for yourself.

people seem to start to see "reference recordings" as a footprint which curve must be matched in order to have a good master.

guys you don't need to use an analyzer for that, there are numerous tools which do it automatically on the fly for you.

For all the others: DO trust your ears and your analytical and musical senses
