Mixing To Mastering

Okay, this might be a dumb question but...

I've been listening to a lot of music in eaphones lately and i'm wondering how much of that whole stereo thing is figured by the mixer and by the master.

Like, if I give the master a mix how many notes would I have to give him?

I know that's a cooked question. I'm not an intern, I've actually been cutting wood at night for a control studio while I crank brains on banner ads during the day. So please bear with my lack of experience, but working as hard as i do, I could use as much prep as possible.

Thanks guys,

And what exactly is that?

Do you mean the mono vs stereo balance, panning width, pan settings, how instruments are placed within a sound image, stereo vs freq spectra, sorting out the frequencies, adding stereo width to specific instruments, usage of dynamic processing to create width, the dimensions and depth of a stereo mix, adding reverb contra stereo width enhancer , how to mix/master a stereo mix so that it sounds good in mono, adding width to different frequency ranges, parallel processing with different pan settings, mixing diffrent groups of instruments etc etc?

mix as much as you can, as well as you can .... and then ask for notes from you ME ... and then remix it .... and eventually nail it or give up or run out of time or money.

at mastering, i ask for anything you'd want to say, as well as a ref for levels and eq.

mastering is to enhance your vision ... so present it. it's also to make a whole, so define it.
