Ok, stupid question:

Some of the stuff that Moodymann, Omar-S and Theo Parrish etc put out, sound as if it shouldn`t work. But it fits just right on the final cut/release.

Some samples:

Any tips on mastering, cutting etc

A lot probably have to do with the right frequencies, headroom, arrangement.

Thanks

Please move if not in the correct forum.

Is your question mainly about getting these type of mixes to 'translate' well to a vinyl transfer?

a lot of tracks by those guys sound a bit lo-fi (in a good way) to me. i would guess this is mostly to do with the production...keeping it raw and not always having a bright/polished eq sound. i think any good vinyl cutter can take care of it ...if you want to be sure, send a reference to the vinyl cutter.

some material translates to vinyl better then others. Those producers who become noted for pushing the envelope in terms of level, punch, content, etc. do so by two means, imo:

1) Time. After each 12" cut lessons are learned.
2) Relationships. Working with one mastering engineer over time develops an important rapport. What you want and what they need/want become embedded in the process. Things get efficient.

I do for lack of a better word detroit techno on my label. I have also worked with lots of guys who do 313 house to. When I get cut and I have sent a few ppl there I use The Exchange. As many people have mentioned what you put to Digital is different than vinyl. Depending on the engineer it could be to your tastes or not. For me Nilz at The Exchange has translated what I wanted very close to the original but on the disk. With no disrespect to Ron up at NSC I have heard what went in come out very different (not always a bad thing).

You can hit me back if you want more information or specifics from my experience.

Hi. my main question was if the sound, dynamics etc were down to the mastering, the mix/production or both.

Thanks for all the replies.
