NTP 179-470 ???

I have a source in germany who is selling a racked pair of NTP 179/470 limiters. does anyone here have any take on these? Pros? Cons? Good for mastering or tracking? I have had no experience with NTP, but I think NTP stuff is highly mentioned here.... i could not find any info in the 179-470. thanks.

No there is no website. NTP went out of business, started again as DAG2000 and now, I don't know what they're doing. Maybe they're back in business again.
They made some wonderful stuff in the seventies and eightties, and I'm a big fan of their opamp sound. But that is more colored than these 179-400s. Different era.

I bought a pair of 179-400 but never got around to racking them. (They fit in a standard eurorack 3u which you can buy for 30 euros) Connectors are available and cost around a euro or two. So nothing weird there..
These Limiters have the ZFT input transformer module, which is very very cool. (and a nice Lundahl output trannie of course)
I might sell mine, not sure yet, but I'm concentrating on mixing more now, and these would be perfect for mastering. (very clean with an automatic softclip so you can drive them pretty good) And I found a good mastering guy so.. eeh hohum

There is a brochure with some technical info here:
http://www.gyraf.dk/schematics/NTP_Brochure.pdf

I do have more technical info and schematics if anyone is interested. Also how the 179-470 is wired. (which is not really complicated) PM me if you want it.

They were part of a line of broadcast analogue gear. Here's a screenshot of another brochure:

I used to use my 179-470 for mastering, and it's nice - clear and punchy.

But since I've got the Crane Song STC-8 it seems that the 179-470 is of no help anymore for mastering. The NTP after the STC-8 made the tracks sound much more processed - and they were LESS loud than without the NTP. Could be that it was the wrong kind of sound (Electro / HipHop), but this test was so obvious that I've not been using the NTP 179-470 for mastering ever since.

But sometimes I use those old 179-250 for mastering (in parallel, and before the STC-8), to get that unique thick pumping sound. But it's more of an fx, whereas the 179-470 is rather clean.

I remember from the days when I used it for mastering that the 179-470 made the snare stick out very nicely on Rock tracks. And somehow the Waves L1 / L2 sounded better after the 179-470... At least it was much better sounding than when the same amount of loudness was gained solely from the L1 or L2.

As said, the STC-8 for me is a better replacement as regards mastering. But all of the NTP stuff is really great and something special (I've got MicPres, EQs, the 179-120 Comp, the 179-250 Limiters, and the 179-470). The 179-470 surely is one of the cleanest (yet punchy) analogue Limiters out there.

The 179-470 has got several options to change the time settings of the Limiter. I usually stayed with the short ones, but it's worth a try!
And the release is in two steps (one short, one longer), if I remember correctly.
