Is it possible to use single-band compressor while mastering?

It's possible, but not while hopping on one foot whistling the Japanese national anthem.

I've managed it with republic of congo national anthem but I agree it is very difficult with the Japanese.

Are we taking the piss a bit too much here? The poor chap is just after some advice.

The question is:

Why do you think it's not?

Yes single band compression is used much. Many mastering engineers use multi band only in problematic situations just like M/S Processing. Maybe start with with a good sounding eq followed by a compressor and a peak limiter. Bypass everything and start listening what you need to make it sound better and get an acceptable level (this should not be an issue but sadly it is) for you or you're customer.
And sometimes you need to use multiband, M/S, clipping, harmonic distortion, expanding etc but I think in most cases not.

While the above post explains it nicely, I was going to say something along the lines of "almost nothing but" and leave it at that.
