Tiny. Sure, you can certainly help with modal issues with multiple subs and careful placment. Are you ever going to completely eliminate all axial modal issues in all 3 dimensions, not to mention the tangential and oblique modes simply with additional subs? No - not unless you plan to literally have dozens and dozens of subs in the room. Also, one must do a feasibility and cost analysis. Would you rather spend $6k on 4 decent subs and lose a ton of floorspace placing them to deal with the axial modes in 2 of the 3 room axes (no help for vertical modes when they're all sitting on the floor...) - OR - 1 to 2 killer subs that will knock your socks off and treat the room accordingly (which will also deal with the tangentials and obliques - not to mention assisting with general decay time control)? | I'm thinkiing that the first mode or two in each direction is the most troublesome - and the hardest to damp out with corner traps. I wouldn't use 2 or 4 subs in lieu of bass trapping, just as a suspenders to compliment the belt. Floyd Toole published some studies suggesting that you can do a lot of mode cancellation with just two subs. One "extra" sub isn't much to pay if the lowest 2-4 modes in the room are tamed. The other thing I have going for me it that new construction here in Oregon is typically 2x6 studs on 24" centers - so I already have pretty effective panel traps. -tINY |
