Quick Preamp Config. Query...all welcome!

Hi guys,

A configuration query if anyone can help....

This is my current setup.

HARDWARE SYNTHS> ANALOG MIXER> SOUNDCARD> COMPUTER


I want to use something a bit more special than my analog mixer’s line ins (i.e a nice standalone 2 channel preamp) when recording and was wondering where I could place it in the chain..

Other than the obvious place of BEFORE the mixer, could I patch it in across my ALT 3/4 outs on my mixer BETWEEN it and the soundcard???

My reasoning is convenience...all my synths could remain plugged into their respective line ins permanently for composing, then, whatever I channel I wanted to record to disk I could send to ALT 3/4 knowing the pre would always be juicing up the output to my soundcard.... (rather than having to patch each individual synth into the pre for each part I was recording)

So my question...would it sound the same?

Are you talking about taking the line outs from the desk into a separate preamp?

If so, do you really want re-amplify a signal that's already at line level?

I think you'd be better off reserving this extra pre for recording the 'focus' track(s) - e.g. vocals - direct to the sound card, so you'd have:

HARDWARE SYNTHS> ANALOG MIXER> SOUND CARD 1&2> COMPUTER + MICS/LINE> SOUND CARD 3&4> COMPUTER
