Thread Starter | Joemeek6Q pulsating tick using its a/d??
Hey Guys,
I just used the ad in the SixQ today doin' some vocal tests. I was pretty impressed with the sound initially, much better than I had expected. I dont have to use the onboard convertors, just trying it.
I was foolin around with this high voice sound, like Mariah or Bon jovi, and I kept getting this pulsating ticking sound on playback. No clipping, just during the high voice thing. (Yes, I can do that....sounds pretty useless really, dolphin whale sounds)
I dont have a clue what that is from.
Unhooked the spdif and went into the Echo again with the meek, and it doesnt do it when I recorded again.
Ideas?

Yes, its worthless for anything I do . Just like to annoy people at work with it! I have been back in the studio for a while now, and it WONT do it with the echo converters, at all. Again, no clipping with either....plus its a pulsating clipping with timing, like 8th notes, but only when the high voice thing happens.
Oh well, like I said I dont need the ad in the Meek, but they sound very good....still surprised.

Have you tried setting the 6Q as the master clock in your soundcards software? The 6Q wont clock from other sources, it must be the master to use the spdif output. Also, do you have the 6Q's sample rate set to the same as your recording sample rate? I had similar results when I first used mine with spdif and not making the 6Q the master. To tell you the truth, I havent noticed much of a difference between digital and analog out on this particular unit. I now have mine hooked up to my patchbay and patch it in from that to my Digimax fs via 1/4" TRS cables. I dont really like changing between clock sources in any given project so Ive continued to use the analog outs. Hope that helps.

Hey Layman, thanks for the reply.
I finally got the track in Sonar to recognize the spdif out. Its not labeled as a digital out, just 8/9. No acknowledgment that its a different out at all. So once that happened, and levels were ok, I just went with it. I never changed management in the soundcard for anythoing, maybe I should try that though.
The sample rate buttons on the back didnt make sense either, and after calling PMI on thursday, the guy didnt know how to set it either!! LOL!! He said "Its one up, one down" (for 48) he didnt know which 2..
Anyway, whatever I have done to make it flutter with the high notes, is probably user error... the time I was using the a/d though, it was very good.........pristine even.

Your track in Sonar should recognize your spdif input, not output(typo im sure). The buttons on the back to set the sample rate are a little strange yes. But once you get your head around it, its pretty easy math.
44.1 with times1 button = 44.1k
44.1 with times2 button= 88.2k
48 with times1 button = 48k
48 with times2 button = 96k
You should definetly pick a master clock source when introducing other digital devices to your set-up. Pops and Clicks are inevitable otherwise. In your soundcards set up software their should be an option to slave to spdif or similar. I am unfamiliar with with your soundcard so thats all I can really tell ya bout that.

Ok Ill try that, thanks! I finally found the button config that stopped the peg in the spdif fader in the soundcard software, so I assumed it was set at 48.
If I set the spdif like you say for the Meek, is that a global setting, or just for that digital channel? If it is a global setting, I would think I couldnt use the Meek at the same time with other pres....
Sorry for the Gumpness, I usually only record mic'ed sources, so this is all greek to me!

Gumpness aloud my friend
Setting the clock in your soundcard to the 6Q(spdif) is a global setting in a sense. You should definetly be able to use your soundcard just as you did before, only difference being, that it will clock from the 6Q rather than internally in your soundcard. They should co-exist with no problems.

Ok, I will try that, and thanks! I almost wish the conversion didnt sound as good as it did. Because it makes me want to use it! I did some pretty controlled a/b with them, and it sounded very good. The Echo sounds good also, but getting them to co-exist is what Im after.
I remember someone saying that I may be surprised with the onboard a/d, and I must say they were right, whomever it was......sorry for my disbelief!
