M Powered with external converters?

Hi there,

I hope you'll forgive my novice understanding on the subject (hence my post), but I'm getting confused as to what is possible for using different converters with pro tools m powered.

Specifically, I'm using a Firewire 410, on a PowerMac G5.

The RME ADI-2 looks like it would work, but for the life of me I've done endless internet searching and can't find a lot of info on this subject.

Minimally I'm looking for 2 channels I/O AD and DA, but the ability to expand later in an interface would be great. Would a PCI based card like the Lynx L22 work? When I start reading of all the different types of connections, ie SPDIF, AES, lightpipe etc my brain just starts to melt, and I realize I need help!

Any advice or insight would be appreciated!

Thanks,

Mike

the rme would work just fine as a 2 channel ad/da

you could go spdif out on the 410 to spdif in on the rme, hook up your monitors and youre off.

also, to take advantage of the a/d you could hook up your mics/pres to the analog ins on the rme and take the adat out to the adat in on the firewire 410. or you could use spdif again and plug the mics/pres in to the analog ins and take spdif out of the rme to spdif in on the 410.

hope this helps some?

Thanks Ducky!

So would a pci type card like the Lynx L22 or Lynx Two work?

I guess I'm wondering (forgive my ignorance) that since it's internally installed in the computer, that it would want/have/need to come last in the signal chain (and therefore wouldn't work with M Powered).

Does anyone know about this?

Mike

For a converter to work with PTLE or PTMP, it cannot serve as the interface. The M-Audio interface must be what the converter is connected to the computer, and the computer to the M-Audio interface. A Lynx card will not work because it's by nature an interface (Plugs into the computer, shows up as an audio device, etc).

Some of the M-Audio interfaces have only unbalanced i/o also, that may not be a problem for your setup.

You may consider a firebox with outboard adda or just ad. The Firebox is really pretty good sounding on its own too.

Echo also has some smaller guys now also. Not sure of their specs.

Check out the M-audio profire lightbridge. It has four ADAT to Firewire. you can connect a two channel convertor to the SPdif, later you can add eight channels at a time, any brand of audio to ADAT will work with it. Dejavu?
