Thread Starter | Monitors ~500$ - ive read the other threads.
im upgrading from a pair of event 20/20's soon (like everyone else it seems). and im looking for a pair of speakers in the 500$ range that translate well and are accurate. i dont care if they sound pretty or not. i just want great translation and great accuracy. ive heard the bluesky stuff is pretty nice. what do you all think? i read all the other threads on this and none of them were based purely on translation. |

I HATE the blueksy stuff. They sound like crappy computer speakers to me. Just an opinion. Aaron Sternke |

I honestly think the blue sky stuff is awesome. My friend upgraded from these tiny yamahas, I don't remember the name, and he loves them too. Personally though, go to some guitar center or something around you that has some amount of monitors and bring some music you know, and listen to different monitors. They will sound different in your room, but at least you have some idea. |

| Two KRK ST6 speakers and a stereo amp (RA300, Servo300, PA100B, or a used home stereo amplifier...). -tINY |

B&W 601s. Really nice "home hifi" bookshelves. Paired with a good power amp, will blow anything away under the $1500 price range... In my opinion... Can be had for around $450 I believe. They are simply amazing for everything, except the sub 60hz range. And for that you can use headphones, or add a sub later on. I stand by my statement (from other threads) that powered speakers in this range are really lacking, and generally very poorly designed... Especially when an awesome Onkyo stereo home "integrated amp" can be had for $150 @ Circuit City. |

Dynaudio BM6 maybe? Probably out of your budget ($799) but will last you a long time! Not massive sounding, but amazing midrange and great for mixing and working long hours. You could go the hifi speaker route and grab what I used to have. A pair of Kef 104. They don't sound a million miles away from my dynaudios, but cost me $100..on ebay they seem to go for $200 or maybe $400 for the 104/2 which I haven't heard. |

are these speakers everyone is recommending good translating or are they just "hifi"? is it a big difference going from 8's to 6's?

I don't know about the 20/20 because I haven't listened to them for more than a few minutes at a trade show. The ST6 is much cleaner, flatter and more accurate than the Rockit series. It's pretty similar to the V6 series 2. I like them a little better (the tweeter is smoother and better balanced). -tINY

| I wasn't aware of a third V series from KRK. The ST6 has decent extension, but you won't get bass really loud. That's the point of nearfields I guess. It's fine down to about 60Hz up to around 95dB SPL. If you need extension or need to feel the bass - you need a subwoofer. But if you already have an amp and $500 to spend - the ST6 pair leaves you with about $300 for a sub..... Fostex, Sampson and KRK all have subs for that price range. -tINY |

I'm a big Blue Sky fan. I actaully use the Pro Desk's, which are over your budget, but i think the media desk's sound pretty dam fine as well!!! I know a few dance acts thats use them and they are all very happy with them... I would try to save a bit more money though. Try to get to around $1000, this opens up a whole near area of speakers for you!! The new ADAM's come into range, as do the Blue Sky Pro Desk's, better Dynaudio...

Another + for Blue Sky. They are great for the price! And the more high end ones are really sweet!

I also think the KRKs are the choice to make. I use the V6 series 2 and I really like the imaging and the smooth flat frequency response. If you want deep bass get a sub to go with them. You won't be disappointed.

I'm gonna throw out the Emu PM5's again. Don't down these because of creative, they didn't screw these up, thank god. They are very impressive. The clarity and imaging are wonderful. When I got them I was worried about the bass response. But it is actually very usable once I got them set up in my room. Give them a shot if you get the chance. Again, love the Blue sky stuff.
