Yet another room treating thread

I'm going to puchase more Owens Corning. Would it be better to puchase with the ASJ facing, FSK facing or neither. The place I have called is saying that they do not sell the 705 without the facing. How much difference would the facing make when making panels?

Depending on what you are using it for. If for bass traps then yes using the FSK will act as a membrane and absorb more of the low end. It will also absorb less of the high end (this could be good or bad depending on your room). For first reflection panels you want to make sure there is not FSK on the front. You can just peel it off.
Also you can us 703 if you are short on money. I would recommend though that you use 6" of it when using for bass trapping.

... or 6" of 703 for 75% of the price and better performance.

Thanks. so stacking them in a frame from floor to ceiling would work best? should I start with the bass traps or the panels first?

In most small rooms [less than about 5,000 cubic feet] you don't want or need thin panels... generally a broadband approach is more rational.

The most efficient form of broadband treatment is 4 to 6" of upholstered mineral fiber - corner mounted floor to ceiling in all the vertical corners - then use the same to cover the early reflection points [walls and ceiling].

You can get a good rough estimate of the reverb time and Sabin [the unit of measure for acoustic absorption] content requirements using this web based calculator:

What do you mean by "bass traps or the panels first"? If you mean the thinner panels for the first reflections then you really want to do both. Bass traps for the corners and thinner panels for the first reflections.

Man you just gotta try free standing self enclosed basstraps from Ethan Weiners plans. You can take them anywhere and place them right up against the walls, strategically in a varied pattern. If you use 3/4 or 1 inch dense board for the rear of the traps, all the weight at the back means they won't fall over even free standing in place! It costs about $1,000 to treat a 12X16 room and that includes 703 panels suspended from the ceiling too.It just takes labor but even the lumber yards will do the first cuts for free.Get them to do all of the cuts except for 2X2's which you can free cut and it's just nailing and sealing them. They will last forver and best of all you can move them to your next studio too...Oh and they work GREAT.

http://www.ethanwiner.com/basstrap.html but even Ethan will tell you that for smaller rooms it is best to use broadband bass traps.

Thanks Glenn. With the ceiling, do I cover the entire thing or what? I know that there will be reflections off of the ceiling that could cause probs

If you can it is not a bad idea to cover the whole thing.. Really depends on if you have enough panels for it.
