save some money and get an AT4040. RecentlyIi realized a mic shootout in Brazil at my Orkut forum and among several models, the 4040 was the winner.
BTW.. I do not work for this company.

The mics involved:
tlm193
at4040
mxlv67G
at4050
c3000b
c2000b
gt55
mxl2003
etc

i got an at2020 for free, and i must admit that i do use it often. before i really had any other mics, i used it al lthe time on vocals, and with just the right eq, i got some really decent sounds. i also use it on my voice a lot when i scream. for a free (well $100) condenser, i like it. it has its uses.

heres a song i did using the at2020 for all of the vocals. it's a joke holiday song i made on x-mas eve while the parents were at a party.

I own both the Apex and the AT 2020.
They are both decent low cost mics.
I like the APEx a bit better for vocals.
Though neither of these mics are true vocal mics.
Better on instruments.

Actually my APEX was modded by Dave Thomas.
It sounds far better than the stock 415.

My friend has the stock 415, and it sounds not too bad.
Good for the money.

Also you should consider the CAD 2200.
Another decent low-priced mic.

or we could step up the price (with mention of the 4040) and talk about all the wonderful r0de mics in budget range
NT1-A
NT1000

Or the Electrovoice-blue Raven, I really like it and it's VIBEY

Save more and get an AT4050, you won't regret it. Otherwise an SM7B is a good choice with the right pre amp.

mxlv67G?

Better have a half-ass pre-amp.

I have one of those too.
I have a few MXL mics.
None of them are as responsive as they should be.
You need some happening gain with your pre in order to drive them.

I like the CADs, APEX and ATs better, in that respect.
The MXLs are okay for instrument mics.
And they are okay on certain singer's voices.

As I said, you better have a decent pre-amp if you go with MXLs.

I have 2 AT2020's I picked up cheap, For vocals, it works but my 4050 is way better but also more money. For the cheap take a look the Studio Projects B1, it runs about the same price as the 2020, but I have found decent uses for it on acouctic guitars and some vocals. Infact I would reccomend the B1 over the AT2020 if you are looking for an all purpose kind of mic. Good Luck.
