Need Some Advice On a Setup

I have a presonus firebox currently and was working with a Neumann mic(TLM 193), but the mic just recently gave out on me. So now I just have the presonus, and I dont have the money to buy another Neumann(hopefully I can get it repaired for cheap). But if I cant I was thinking about buying a preamp, a compressor and a cheper mic for all under 1500 in an attempt to get the same sound I had off the Neumann. I have about 15-1200 to spend but Im not sure what route I should go if it costs to much to repair the Neumann mic. Like I said all I have now is a presonus and I need a mic at the very least...wouldnt getting a preamp and a coompressor with a somewhat cheaper mic help me acheive a sound as good if not better than when I had the Neumann and the Presonus alone?

I only record mixtapes and demo tracks on this mic so the quality only has to reach that type of standard...no big time album stuff we record that at another studio

just one of many zillion alternatives.
mic.....look maybe at the cad range. lots of folks like em.
mic pre.....imho for value/sound...tough to beat a rane ms1b.
the above wont cost you an arm and a leg.
test the combo out and see what u think.
all the best.

Check on getting the mic repaired before you do anything else. The TLM 193 is a really nice mic and I think you will be dissappointed if you downgrade too quickly. IMHO, the mic is much more important for getting a good sound than even the mic pre and compressor are.
Good luck!

I don't really know offhand - did the mic go out completely or is it making any noise at all? Someone over at Prosound Web mentioned that Neumann's repair costs were $35 for a quote plus shipping both ways and then $80/hour for repair but I have not had experience with repairing the mics. The audio school I attend has several of them, so I've used them - never had to deal with maintanance, etc. Give Neumann a call and talk to them they should be able to give you more info. Either way it should be less than the $1500 you were budgeting for a new rig, and you may have enough left over to still get another preamp or compressor. Good luck!

Heres the link to the prosoundweb thread I found this mentioned in - scroll down a bit

I agree that the mic is more important than the preamp and the comp so getting it repaired should be your number one priority.
The Rnc comp is pretty good for the price. You might also want to check out a used Urei ( the LA4s sound good and aren't too expensive).
