Cool Auralex Bass Traps?!?

My band and I have moved into a rehearsal facility in Chicago called the Music Garage (also have a location in Brooklyn), which will be doubling as my new recording space. The room is not huge (approx. 15x25x9ish) but even untreated, the room sounds much better than my basement ever did. Treating the room and getting it to sound as good as possible is my main priority right now. The group that owns and runs the facility has a relationship with auralex in which they can get materials for cost and subsequently use 2'x4' foam panels to do the majority of their treatment for rooms in the facility. After some gearslutty research, I think nearly all seem to agree that foam does/will not do an adequate job of accoustic control, especially on the low end. I think it goes without saying that I'm set on getting a number of fiberglass bass traps and have heard only good things about GIK and ReadyTraps. This would be the end of the story, but....the facility has a policy that ONLY members of the facility can install/attach anything to the walls and, further, the treatment must be an auralex treatment. This still leaves the possibility open for buying bass traps from GIK or the like and mounting them on stands, especially in the corners (which i may very well do). Now to my question...

Does auralex have any comparable products to GIK or ReadyTraps' fiberglass bass trap products?

and...

What other auralex products could i most effectively use to treat the walls and the ceiling (assuming that I'm using GIK bass traps on stands for the corners)?

You guys kick ace and I hope you can help me out on this one. Thanks alot, Nate

First you should go to the Auralex web site as they have the answer for you there. RealTraps or GIK Acoustics have panels that are on stands hence you would not have to attach them to the walls. If you use the Auralex foam, don't use the spray as it looks really bad if you have to take them off later. But use the corner sticky's they have. They have Lenard Bass Traps and the better Mega Bass traps that you can put in the corners too.

thanks for the response, revelation. Let's assume I go ahead and buy the GIK panels w/ stands for the corners, how would you recommend i go about treating the walls and ceilings w/ products made by Auralex? Does auralex have any fiberglass-type panels like GIK that will have the same effect as the GIK panels? I looked at the auralex site and it seems that nearly all of their products are made of foam and not fiberglass. thanks

if your room is large enough, you should really think about buying a couple of Auralex's Venus Bass Traps. they made a huge difference in the acoustics of my home studio

Install tip

I use T-pins from the sewing section at Wal-Mart to install any foam. No sticky mess - and cheap!

Same here, absolutely the best way to attach ac foam IMO. I used 4 pins to each 2x4 sheet of sonex, they are invisible, and hold great!

Thanks for the T-Pin tip. I only wish I had heard of it earlier and saved my basement walls from the mess of spray-on adhesive. The facility and ONLY the facility is allowed to mount anything directly to the walls and they do so by mounting the foam on a 2x4' wood board and wood mount. It actually looks really nice. I'm wondering if there is something more effective at controlling the accoustics of the room than foam, made by auralex, that they could mount similarly to the walls and the ceilings.

sure, auralex makes a mineral fiber insulation. it's just like 703 or rockwool pretty much.

right here

order a bunch of this and have them screw it to the boards like they would glue foam and then wrap some fabric around and staple it to the back.thumbsup
