I'm looking for an inexpensive ribbon mic to add to my arsenal(?) of home studio mics. I've read good things about the Shinybox 46 ($250) and the Cascade Fat Head ($159). Has anyone used either of these mics and in what applications? Thanks GOD IS GOOD! ALL THE TIME! |

There are some audio samples on their website (shinybox), they sound quite nice. narco |

I have my mic from the tape op group buy, which is the same mic basically, and I like it a lot. I have never used any other ribbon mic, but it works well on one singer I work with often who has a kind of shrill tone to his voice- it rounds that out nucely. I like it on drum overheads, backing vox (put people on each side for backing vox- very cool sound). I recently replaced the stock transformer with a cinemag, although I have not had a chance to try that yet other than on my voice, so I will have to report more on that when I can. But definitely worth the money.

Why don't you call Jon at Shinybox and ask him about them? He's a straight up guy, we're sharing a booth with him at AES San Fran also. Great guy, would not steer you wrong and would honestly talk about any differences he knows of. War |

i've been putting off getting the shiny box and they seem to be raising in price every couple months. i think they were like $310 for the 46 with lundahl transformer when i first heard about them and around $160 for the 46 with no tranformer upgrades. a couple months ago they raised to $350 and included a shockmount (46mxl) and the cinemag up to ~$250 (46mxc). now the lundahl and cinemag are both up to $400 with the unmodded up to $250. he got rid of the transformer options for the 23 too.

I bought a shinybox because John's mods improve the sound (better transformer, grillwork tinkering). Getting a Cascade would be cheaper, but it wouldn't sound as good. At some point you gotta ask yourself: what's more important? Great sound or beer money? (Tough question, I know.)
