theres a lot of plugs but to me nothing beats doing it with a real record. especially if i was doing a whole track since plugs get quite repetitive

Some vinyl mastering places can make you a one-off pressing. If you 'age' it properly, you'll get the real deal. Izotope Vinyl is cool and all, but it's putting that stuff on top of the tracks; using vinyl, it's more integral to the overall sound.

just get the most scratched record you can find from a thrift store, loop it, eq to taste, and bus compress it with the vocal track.

If you're gonna do this, try to find the LP version of Korn's "Take a Look in the Mirror" as it has two or three minutes of silence in the middle of one side. That way the noise won't get repetitious, which is usually the dead giveaway of this technique.
