Adam A7 with Adam Sub 8 or BLUE SKY PRO DESK SYSTEM 2.1?

Which one is better for my small home studio (untreated room... :( ?
Price is the same... I cannot hear Blue Sky's, because it isn't in stores here, I can only buy it via internet...

Thanks!

Hi Siegfried! Have you heard the Adams in person? How you like them? Do you feel the need for a sub with the Adams and if, then what kind of music you do?

I'm thinking about the A7's myself and checking out the BlueSkys as well. I can't demo anything but Genelecs here in Finland... Sucks!

I haven't heard A7 yet, but here in Czech Republic there is new distributor of Adam, so I'm going to hear it. The problem is that I'm not experienced on monitors, I want to buy my first decent monitors for about 1000 euro. I'm doing electronic music with many acoustic instruments, dirty guitars, choirs etc... something like industrial noise gothic metal + gentle and sweet triphop + clicksandcuts... ,) so big bass response are important for me...

I don't think you'll get an answer to that question that could be described as definitive.

I haven't compared the two systems, but I did write a detailed Review of the Blue Sky ProDesks that might be helpful background reading for you.

Hello Siegfried:

If you are interested in purchasing or evaluation a ProDesk 2.1 system, please e-mail me your contact information. I will see what we can arrange through our main EU distribution office in Germany.

Cheers!

Siegfried,

I use Adam A7s, and I think you'd be surprised how much low end you get out of them. If it helps your bottom line, I think you'd be fine without the sub.

Just my 2 cents.

this is probably one of those rare times where you probably can't go wrong on the purchase of either (a7's or blue sky).

next on the list should be some treatment. then you'll REALLY find out how relatively beneficial the purchase was.

This is an old thread but I'd like to know a few years later how does the original Pro Desk compare to the newer models available on the market. I can buy one Pro Desk system for cheap, but as I've already used a media desk, would the difference be significant enough ? Also, how does the Pro Desk compare to the Adam A77X regardless of the price? Is it ine the same league? Thank you.

I'm not sure I can answer your specific questions but as I notice I contributed to the original thread, I'll just chime in and say my ProDesks MkIs are still working flawlessly after 7 years of being in use nearly 24/7. Do I feel I need another set of monitors for my little space? No, although like any self-respecting Gearslut I experience waves of monitor-envy and occasionally dream of upgrading to something more slutty. With double/triple the budget I'd probably put down my cash elsewhere (Neumann KM120s & Geithans look mighty sexy) but the bottom line in my world is that if I can't make great mixes on the ProDesks it's likely to be pilot error rather the monitors and they still seem like amazing value for money, especially if you absolutely must know what's going on down at 30-40Hz, which very few 2-way nearfields can make much sense of.

Thank you very much for the input, I've tried the mk2's in my space and I loved them. Talking about space, it's interesting you mentioned that you have little space. Since most of us are monitoring close to the speakers (1 to 1.5 meters most of the time) is it that important to have powerful speakers? I mean, listening to nearfield monitors in a small room and even more so in a bigger room helps to take the room out of the equation, isn't it?

What do you think? Also, since you've been using the system for a long time how do your mixes translate to other speakers?

The ProDesks work very well up close and personal in a room with limited treatment - mine are about 1m from my ears, and thankfully excellent S/N so no distracting hisses or hums. I rarely need to crank them and have no way ever felt either short of power or that they aren't working well at low volumes, which they seem to do very well. Mixes translate very well - never experienced any nasty surprises on other systems, large or small.

Personally, I think having a sub is a factor worth considering in 'taking the room out of the equation' in a tight space where treatment options may be limited, because having positioned the satelites exactly where you want them for ideal MF/HF response, you don't have to move everything around again because LF is out of whack due to being too close to a wall etc. Just move the separate LF sub around and adjust the gain until it sounds balanced - you can do this with test-tones if you want but I did mine by ear. I have never experienced any sense of the bass being disconnected or localised in any way - it all sounds perfectly balanced and easy to work with to my ears.

Sometimes I feel like something of a BlueSky evangelist on here, but I really have no horse in this race - I only write about my experiences with what still seems like an excellent sub-$1,000 monitoring investment when I bought them 7+ years ago. So much of what BlueSky expound about the benefits of an integrated 2:1 system seems to make sense to me, and more importantly seems to apply perfectly in practice, at least in the world of my little project studio.

YMMV.
