Thread Starter | high quality DA converters to cheap monitors, totally worthless?
Hello everyone, this is my first post on this amazing board. this is my cheap mixing setup: Digidesign Mbox -> Event TR5 Active monitors I get some relieve thanks to TritoneDigital ColorTone PRO plug-in (Dangerous 2buss impulse; no real analog summing but I really like what I get from it) on Protools LE master buss and I was wondering if I could moreover improve the stereo imaging and depth of my mixes buying good quality digital to analog converters. my choice would go for Mytek Stereo 96 DAC and I'm not goint to discuss this choice on this thread so my setup would be connected like this: Mbox S/PDIF -> Mytek Stereo96 DAC -> Event TR5 Active Monitors At this point the weakest point of my setup would definitely be the last but also EXTREMELY important one: Event TR5 monitors! I will surely change my monitors as soon as I can afford something better but I also know this won't happen for a while so I'm wondering if it really worth to spend some money on Mytek or any other D/A converters with my actual monitoring gear. Sorry for this prolix post and thanks for your possible comments! |

Have you treated your room? Coz that's the best value for money upgrade to your monitoring set-up if you haven't. Just make some DIY broadband absorbers and bass traps... don't whatever you do go down the acoustic foam (Auralex) path. Just a thought. |

But if you don't treat your room first, how will you know that your converters and monitors are doing a good job? I mean won't the character of your monitors change once the room is treated? And how will you assess which converters are to your liking, if you judge them on bad monitors in a bad room?

There's a lot of hype going on around here about converters. However, not everyone is buying into it. Do a search for some of the audio shoot-outs and have a listen for yourself. Better yet, borrow and audition the gear for yourself if you can. I think the advice you'll hear is that it's better to put the money into room treatment, mics, better instruments, etc... |

I heard big difference when I switched from events 20/20 to adam s3a, but I heard considerably less difference between maudio delta and apogee minidac. Would prefer mixing on m-audio>adam over apogee>events any time.

You can get great new monitors for same price as great DA converter I think, so your plan doesn´t make sense to me... dfegad
