Thread Starter | Advanced Audio CM-47 mic?
I noticed the Advanced Audio CM-47 mic for sale. I did a search on this forum and nothing turned up. It is claimed that the capsule "has the best single-sided kk67 emulation we have ever heard." The mic sells for $225 plus postage. Has anyone used the mic? If so, what do you use it for and does it have the harsh top end as most of the Asian mics? Thanks, Don

I have a couple of his modded Apex 460s. They sound very good. I also have two unmodded 1150 NADY tube mics and another unmodded Apex 460. The NADY's and the APEX are indentical mics. Made at the same factory in China. The modded mics sound far better and less harsh-sounding than the stock units. Dave Thomas, the man who builds the Advanced Audio products knows his stuff. He lives within a few miles from me just outside Vancouver, Canada. If he puts his name on those mics, they must be up to snuff. |

i have an apex 460 with a peluso CEK-12 capsule, cinemag transformer, and the basic advanced audio upgrade (tube, caps, etc,). it's fantastic sounding. I also own some neumann, telefunken, AKG, soundelux, and peluso mics. I believe this mic wound up costing me about $600 and is worth every penny. It's not as flattering as the real thing but blows away anything for similar use under $1000 that I've tried easily -- ADK TL, SL, AT4033, AT4050, current AKG 414 production models. Doesn't sound far off from a real C12, but I didn't buy it to sound like a C12. Also, Dave can be a bit slow, so plan ahead. He's a very good guy to deal with. He just has his hands full with trying to get the whole thing up and running, etc. |

i have one of dave's apex460 mods coming next week. the post before is correct in that it does take awhile. but thats to be expected for a small place with one to a few people doing the work. a buddy of mine has the 460 with the cek-12 capsule that he ran through an sca n72 and it sounded great. i decided to go a different route and get one with the cek-367 capsule (suppose to be a db off of the response of a telefunken u47) got the full upgrade, circuits, transformers, capsule, tube. when i get a chance to play with it some. i'll post back thoughts.

I decided to go for the whole she-bang too albeit with a Nady TCM1100 that's being converted to a 9 pattern mic. I went for the CEK-12 capsule, Cinemag and circuit upgrade and will post some impressions when I get it too-- hoping to have it w/in a few weeks to a month (sent it to him earlier this month)

I bought a CM-1. I understand it is the same as the Apex 460 and Nady 1150. I'm considering having it upgraded. I'd like a thick, full unhyped top end sound. What components would need altering to achieve this sound. I'd like to use the mic as a single O/H in a three mic set-up (FOK, snare, O/H). So the mic would have to pick up toms as well as cymbals. Thanks, Don

I just ordered a couple CM-67s for orchestra work. We use a similar circuit but with a 6072a tube used in the AKG C12 which in our experience is superior to both the EF86 and AC701 tubes. We take an APEX 460 or NADY TCM-1150 Chinese tube microphone and change the capsule for a Peluso CEK-89, modify the circuit to emulate the M269c and change the output transformer to a custom BV11p wound to the same specifications as the transformers used in the AKG C12/ELAM 251 and M269c. The Peluso CEK-89 capsule has a response that is within 1db of the original kk67 Neumann capsule used in the M269/U67 microphones. The U67/M269 has a circuit in it that reduces the response below 40hz to stop popping and rumble. However, the Peluso capsule has a natural response that tighter below 80hz than the original kk67 capsule and will take 2-3 db more SPL. A major studio in Montreal Canada bought a CM-67 microphone from us several months ago and compared it to an original U67 and no one could hear a $6000 difference and the studio ordered 3 more CM-67 microphones from us. The CM-67 with case, power supply, cable and shock-mount is $579 including shipping. The CM-67 has a 9 position pattern switch located on the power supply yielding 3 patterns between OMNI and Cardiod and 3 patterns between Cardiod and Figure-Eight. Delivery is 2-3 weeks at this point as I have about 10-12 custom orders in various stages of completion.

Thanks for the replies guys. Hey T. RayBullard. I have the CM-1 Stellar mic. Do you take mics for modding? Are you located in the U.S. or Germany?

Nothing against Mr. Thomas personally, he seems like a great guy and all, but I hope his business practices are more organized these days.

I just ordered the Advanced Audio CM-54 the other day. I wasn’t going to buy another mic until next year. I wanted to keep it down to one new mic a year, but I thought this mic might be a good deal to go for. I was looking for a nice mic for guitar or piano, and I’m hoping this mic might sound good for those things. I was thinking of buying a Neumann KM-184, but if the Advanced Audio CM-54 works out I’ll be happy with that. . |

I was considering trying my hand at modding this mic but I think it's a little too advanced for me. I read a post on another forum about a guy who did some mods to his Nady TCM 1150. Now his mic dosen't work and he can't find the problem. I don't know if I can mention the forum but mabe someone from here can help him. In the intrest of decency the forum is Home Recording BBS microphones. If I broke a rule sorry.

Just got my Advanced Audio CM-54 today. It sounds great ! I have been testing it out all day. I have to admit I don’t have a lot of mics to compare it with. The only other mics I have are the Studio Projects C1 and a Shure 57. What I wanted the CM-54 for is guitar or piano. It seems to be working really good for that. The CM-54 has a fairly high output, so it works really good with my GT The Brick. The GT Brick doesn’t have a lot of extra gain, so I always had problems using the Shure 57 for acoustic instruments. First day testing out the CM-54 seems all good. Now it is time for me to start recording songs to see how I like it in the mix. . |

Does anyone know The Advanced Audio web address. Is this the same company that used to do ward-beck racking, servicing, and mods?
