Black Lion Audio?

Anybody here ever had their mods done I heard they can trick out the SM8 mic pre's to be equivalent to higher end pre's just wanted to know how they might compare to a FMR RNP ? Thanks

I sent my 002 to BLA for the full converter mod.
Great communication and smooth transaction.
Matt is a good guy and does good work. You'll have to decide if you want your particular mod done but I'm pleased with what the BLA mod did for my 002.

Hey bobxhopefield. actually, this is a " proto-type one off" that matt did for me as a favor in return. This is the first Digi-max that Matt has done. Anyone that's interested in the mod will have to contact Matt to get the full details of the mod and price! I know he installed his hi-speed instrumentational op-amps. Unfortunately, he couldn't do the clock at this time because he had to order " special" parts.. ..But I'm to send the Digi-Max back to him when the parts come in so he can finish the clock. He also will do the power supply too! ( waiting on parts). It removed the " haze" associated with the Digi-Max and even though modded gear is for the individual to justify the results, I think it's good..... for me!.....

Let us know how this goes. I have been using a Digimax and other pres (mostly RME) into an Alesis HD24XR. Last night I did an experiment, comparing the A/D of the Digimax and RME Octamic D converters with the HD24. The HD24 was markedly smoother sounding and with much better low level resolution. The music was very dynamic singer/songwriter with guitar, keyboard and accordian. The room is excellent and really has great dynamic range. The HD24 sounded like a black velvet backdrop compared to a sort of TV snow (this is an exaggeration, of course, but you get the idea) of the RME and Presonus. Of course, clocking issues can't be ignored. I used wordclock derived from the MH MIO 2882 I was using to monitor the recording and it didn't seem like I was getting any grief from that. However, it may be that the w/c making the rounds contributes to decrease in quality compared to all the conversion and clocking happening internally within the HD24.

Just do it. For the price it's worth the risk. Plus these kinds of things are kinda fun. I just did a kinda similar thing buying a modified Oktava mic. I'm thinking about buying an sm8 as well and getting it modded. But, I'll let you be the guinea pig first. In return, I'll let you know how the OktavaMod 319 mic performs when I get it, so you can spend even more money. Deal?
