AT4047 vs m177 for over heads?

I checked out The Listening Session files. Both of these mics sound different on the ac. guitar. I'm sure both will yield acceptible results on overheads.

I'm just interested to see if anyone has thoughts regarding one mics's use as an over head, compared to the other.

I'll not be using them as cymbal mics, but rather mics to capture most of the kit (backed up by close mics on kick and snare -- since I'm going after the whole kit, I'm leaning towards LDC's). Also, it's a small room with low ceilings (of course).

I'll be using them in X/Y, spaced pair, and "Recorderman" configurations, or whatever else works!

Alternatives which would be more cost effective or versatilve on other sources are welcome.

The budget is $600 for the pair (probably trying to buy used -- I know the 4047 might be a bit of a stretch for that amount).

Why don't you get a couple of the MXL 990 and 991 combos from Guitar Center or Musician's Friend. They got for about $100 a mixed pair with carrying case. The 991 is a decent enough mic for acoustic guitar and overheads. The 990 is a decent enough mic for toms. This is the low end so I'm going to give you a low end example.

You might also check out the these omni small diaphragm condenser mics. You can get a pair for $45 or so.

The Audio-Technica AT4047 and the AT4040 are good for acoustic guitar and drum overheads as well.

Don't forget the Avenson STO-2 pair.

I know the 4047 works well as an overhead. I've used them in past.

My current fav setup though, is to use a Shinybox 23C (the one with the Cinemag transformer upgrade). A pair would be less than $550. They pretty much ignore the cymbals and pick up the whole kit well. Really ballsy on the kick and toms. You could mic the cymbals if you like and mix them to taste. If you want a brighter snare sound, I'd close mic it as well.

The 603s has always been up for consiteration (thanks Mr Gerst!) and I believe the 991 is the same mic.

Not a bad idea...

And yes, the STO-2 is leading the way for a SDC pair.

And thanks Craig for the ShinyBox recommend...been thinking about those too...

Something that might help:

The style of music will primarily be mober rock (if Death Cab for Cutie and Killswitch Engage somehow had a baby).

I also thought about the MXL v67 or v69.

Haha! Just got a chance to listen to the Naiant$45 mics. Not bad I guess, especially for $45 (for the pair no less!). But I don't think they're be usable for me. They have a hugely scooped, phasey, boxy sound.

But good to know they're out there just in case!

I think the 4047's are a great all around mic and they would get a lot of use for other things as well as drum overheads.

Mics I regularly use for overheads include

A pair of Rode NT1000
A pair of Hamburg or Vienna Editions
A pair of AT 4041 SDC

I own AT4033s & AT4050s, but havn't used them for OH

Most common ones are the NT1000s - everything is crisp & focussed without being brittle.

hope this helps

Thanks man.

I have an NT1000 I'm trying to get rid of!

I could see it working with darker cymbals, but there are some really disturbing frequencies in their (they're getting to be a trademark of the Rode sound...too bad).

If they work for you in your space, great! That's awesome.

They don't work for me, and I'm hoping to get mics that have many more uses than potentially working on OH's.

I'm looking at 4047's for their potential for micing cabs, voice, and ac guitar.

Anyway, thanks again for your post...the 4041's are a serious contender for a SDC overhead option.

BTW, try the 4050's! You might be surprised at how good they'll sound compared with the NT1000's.

4047 absolutely rules on acoustic guitar, IMO.

I wouldn't NOT have a pair.
