8ch ADAT pre

Alright, guys. My boss at the school audio department just told me that we've got $1,000 to spend on an ADAT equipped 8 ch mic pre. I'm thinking of going with the Onyx 800R because it's probably the cleanest and has the best conversion at that price, as well as higher sampling rates. I'm aware of the Presonus and Focusrite models but haven't used them. Thoughts?

Defenately skip the Focusrite.

Presonus recently upgraded their Digimax to Digimax FS with 96kHz capability. Could be worth to try out the Presonus versus the Onyx and see which you like best yourself.

I have a few of the Digimax 96k and like them. Those are slightly over your budget, but I think the new Digimax Fs would be a good. Here's what the company sent in an email:

"The LT and original 48k DM use 24bit Alesis converters. The Digimax
96k and Digimax FS use higher end AKM's. All 4 have different preamp
designs. ; ) We like to keep it interesting rather than copy/paste the same
preamp design over and over like some folks do."

As far as I know onyx800r offer better and more conversion options than audient, and it's cheaper too. It's a very decent preamp. I think this time mackie onyx800r is more for less money. Audient is very good, but little overpriced imho.

The Onyx800R is nice. If you can grab the Audient second hand - get that, it has ace preamps and a ramping phantom psu.
Just make sure you leave some space in the rack for the heat to dissipate and don`t
plug converters (and other digital stuff) in the same powerstrip as all the analog gear without some kind of mains filtering.

Are you saying the Audient has a specific issue with AC and heat ... or was this general advice?

Thanks for the replies, guys.
As an educational institution, it's difficult if not impossible to acquire used gear.
It's also difficult to do anything with money other than what they tell you to do.
So, seeing as to how we had $1,000 to spend and couldn't use any of that money for something else if we spent less on a preamp, we went ahead and ordered the Onyx 800R.
Plus, it just had a lot of nicer options.
Thanks again!

I'm going to London next week...since this is a British company, would this be any cheaper if I were to buy it there than the US? I'm assuming I'm exempted from vat. Where is a good place to buy gear there, and if discounts are given, like 25% off retail, like in the states (sorry for asking ). Will only be there less than a week so not much time to go shopping.
