Thread Starter | Show off your DIY gear!
If you're handy with a soldering iron and a schematic, this is a thread to show off your DIY studio gear builds. Compressors, EQs, mic pre's - let's see who knows their Orange Drops from their Thats and Xicons And if you're not too proud, let us know if it's been a hit or a miss project
Unless you're absolutely busting to comment, try keep the commentary to a minimum - a photo says a thousand words afterall
Where are my pics? Coming soon |

Eye-popping work!
I like how you orient the VUs vertically.
Well done, lad.

@solar. how did you do the lettering on the cases. Creating silk screens for a one-off sounds like more work than most would want to do.

The SSL compressor and preamp pcbs are from pcbgrinder.com, cases are engraved by a friend of mine.
I think there is also a component kit for the SSL compressor available, but the build uses only standard parts which you can get nearly everywhere.
Some of the silkscreened cases (like the pultec and dbx 160) are from collectivecases.com. It would be too expensive to do silkscreen only for a single case.

Awesome work guys.
What would be a good first project to start on for a compressor?

A. | I think the GSSL or 1176 compressor would be a good project to start, with the nod probably going to the 1176 since it's less involved because it's mono. I actually built a LA2A first, but I had a ton of experience building tube guitar amps before taking that on. The LA2A is actually the easiest, so you could also do one of those, but the voltages are MUCH higher and you need to be careful not to get on the wrong end of a live wire.
If you haven't already, check out the Prodigy DIY forum. There are many wonderful projects over there. GroupDIY - We break stuff...and occasionally make stuff.
There are also quite a few folks in the business of providing kits these days, so check some of them out as well. I'm sure if you Google the projects by name you'll turn up some of these suppliers. I also think there's a list in the meta section of the Prodigy forum and there are quite a few vendors in the "White Market" section.
Cheers,

edit: VERY nice looking BTW! | Hi, my friend Frank, did the layout, and all the cards are self etched. The dual concentric pots, had to be custom made. Took a year to complete, and wouldn't attempt it again!!
Actually stopped DIY these days, but it was all a lot of fun, and learnt so much |

A DIY microphone I put together with some help from a friend (no kit, everything came from my house, my friend's house or the hardware store, in case you couldn't tell). Sounds like a Copperphone kind of vibe.

Glad you explained it's a mic.
