That completely depends on your needs... which you haven't stated.

Compare the amount of I/O's to your needs and think about how you envision any expansion...

I second the thought that you should think about how many inputs and outputs you need. The unit is pretty much the same as the 800 with the exception of the number of inputs and outputs.

I don't really think portability is the issue here. The 400 is half rack size. I would rather have the full rack size because it's easier to throw into a small rack. However, if you have some other half rack size gear, you could put that on the other side of the 400 and have two items in one rack space.

It just all depends on your needs or future upgrade path.
