which interface?

At the moment I'm currently getting/upgrading to some new gear and I'm not sure which interface to get. My choices are either a avid mbox mini, presonus firestudio project, line 6 pod HD pro, or m audio fast track c400.

The Fire studio has a lot more flexibility than the others. The converters and pres aren't as good as some in the price bracket, but there's 8 ins meaning you can record as much as you want and keep it as you expand.

Telling us what you want to do with it and the kinds of things you'll be recording/plugging into it would help a lot

Yours sounds like a case where you pick the interface that matches your needs. Sounds like you need only a 2 in 2 out box with mic with phantom power, instrument and line ins. Scarlett 2i2 seems to get a lot of love round here but never used one. Honestly the quality of many of these boxes is quite similar. Focusrite, M-audio, Edirol, Emu, Presonus etc all quite similar. Not bad, but not outstanding. Other things like treatment, monitors, mics and pres will make more difference than converters. Check that there are drivers for your OS.

Next stage up is RME, Apogee, Sound Devices for the all in one boxes. Also the new Focusrite Forte and Echo 2 (duet ripoffs) might be here, not sure, they're new.

After that its standalone pres with standalone DACs and ADCs. Universe of options.

Hi man,

I would suggest you definetely not to go for Line 6. It makes sense only if you want to use teir guitar amp sims. But if you want to use it for something else it sucks. I could neber get reasonable latency out of it, also the sound recorded is really "plastic" I now look myself on M-Audio C400 or C600.

I also used to have mbox and also did not like the sound when recording with mics.

I had reasonable mic sound when I was recording with EMU tracker pre. Actually I think this was one of the best affordable interfaces. Good quality mic preamps and excellent converters. The problem with that one was, that when I changed my laptop to a new one I started to experience sound dropouts when recording, and a lot of distortions during playback. Chipset compatibility issue. I found on forums that many people face the same problem with EMU interfaces. They are excellent when they work, but you may have troubles.

Buy the way there are good deals now on ZZounds for M-Audio interfaces

M-Audio Fast Track C400 USB Audio Interface

Cheerz!

It's not bad. In fact it's great at what it does, but it only does one thing.

Thanks a lot vijsolo! Would you suggest that I use line 6 just for guitars for there amp sims and then use something different like the m-audio c400 just for mics? since I am using zzounds payments plan so I may be able to get both
