Mixing desk insert problem

i just got a new compressor and a couple of new insert cables, but when i plug the insert TRS jack into the insert socket of my mixing desk the sound cuts out completely, but if i pull the jack back out to the first click, the sound comes back in.

Is the fault with my desk's insert jack socket or the insert cable itself?

send and returns backwards. Have found some that are backwards from what they are labeled. Tip Send, ring return. IF you get no sound, flip them.

If that don't work, you got a bum cable or a bad insert jack.

Yes.. When that happens just flip the jacks on the compressor..
And if they are labeled wrong and it's not user error. Then just re-label them so your remember when this happens again..

But if none of that works then somethings up with the cable..I doubt!!

I'm guessing you already tried other insert ch's on the board to see if it was just certain ch's.. I'm thinking it's the tip/sleeve jacks are just reversed.

The other TS-ends of the insert cable are connected to the compressor's in- and output, right?

When you pull it out to first click, essentially what you're doing is tapping off the signal at this point - ie the "send" is being made, but the "return" is not - the normalling isn't being broken, so you can use this as a direct out from your board.

When you push it all the way in, the normalling is broken, and you're not getting signal through your compressor for some reason.

It does sound to me as well that the send and return are plugged the wrong way round into your compressor. Is the compressor metering in any way? if not, that's either the problem, or there's something wrong with how the compressor is connected. try plugging the return cable into the compressor in - you'll probably find that now it meters, and your cables are just wired incorrectly.

Do the compressor's blinky lights blink when the cable is fully inserted? Need to diagnose if the send side of the cable is OK.

Hi
Since you didn't bother to say what make of desk or compressor it is difficult to second guess but there is a possibility that one or both of the connectors going to the compressor are not suitably wired for this unit. There are various ways to connect things and it may simply be incorrect for your combination. Get the soldering iron out.

"Most" insert jacks should be Tip | Send and Ring | Return, but its not uncommon for manufacturers and particularly on older gear to reverse these.

An example is my Soundtracs 32 | 8

The inserts on this console are wired Tip | Return and Ring | Send.

Check the manuals for insert description of both the board and the compressor.
