Affordable Mics that Rival Mics 3x their price?

Just curious to hear mics say under $800 that have lots of MOJO and seem to rival some really great expensive mics

GO!

My two pence...

Condenser - SE Electronics Z3300a. Low price great great mic.
Dynamic - Beyerdynamic M88. Still laughing at how good this sounds. I will just carry on laughing........

i like the at2035 better than the mk4 and i have a hard time remembering how much worse the at2020 was in comparison to the at2035. but the mk4 is a very warm mic. i didnt like it at all because of that. had too much punch too. made it very unatural.

Do you want a good mic, or one with "lots of MOJO"?

The MXL V69ME is an excellent mic. Lots of color and mojo.

The Sennheiser 421 regularly beats out expensive condensers for vocals.

Talking

Does an AEA 44 ($3000) compared to a pristine vintage U47 count ($9000+) count?

I have to add my name to those who mentioned the Beyer M201. I'm not sure if it rivals mics at 3X its price but certainly some mics at twice the price. A while back I compared the M201 to a Sennheiser MD421 and a Shure SM7b on this site. I didn't know which mic I was listening to and ended up preferring the Beyer. At the price the Beyer is a bargain, in my opinion.

Ribbon mic that brings PROPER mojo for little money is Beyerdynamic M260N. The old grey one. Great for lots of stuff and as warm, vibey addition on lots more stuff.

If not already mentioned, Oktava 012, especially good modded one with omni cap, and perhaps the best bang for buck I've ever heard, and I have used a lot of good mics, a good modded Oktava 319, geez, the one I have is sweet, less than $250, with the mod. Not an off the shelf item, it was the third one I had, then had it modded, so some effort, but def. worth at least three times the price in terms of sound. The other two weren't bad either by any means, but some are better than others.

Kidding aside, a "ribbon-ish" known giant killer on the cheap is the Electro-Voice EV 635A dynamic.

Sometimes people sell an already modded one, as a used item. There are at least three guys who do modding that I know of, mentioned often on this list, all seem to be reputable. I used Bill Sitler, did a fine job on several of my Oktava's.

...yes, I've owned 2 of Dave Thomas' tube mics (the CM-47 and CM-12)...both are excellent IMHO and well worth their cost...but if you're looking for mics truly worth 3X their cost, I'd recommend a look at the Stellar tube mics (CM-6 and CM-5)...they are built to the same level of quality as the Advanced Audio mics (in the very same factory) and retail for almost half the price of the equivalent AA mics...at $400, IMHO they easily hang with tube mics in the $1000-1200 price range (like the Mojave MA200, Miktek CV4, Blackspade UM17, and the Telefunken RFT series mics)...
