Thread Starter | Mr816x problems.
Hey guys, I was wondering if any of you have been experiencing problems with your Steinberg mr816x? I just got one about a month ago and I have been having problems with the driver and audio dropping in and out, and it has started to really frustrate me. I have just built a custom DAW computer (PC). I had a Mac with a Duet as my interface before which worked perfectly, but I needed more processing power and more inputs so I thought, "what the hell."
Anyway, the custom PC I built doesnt have the 6 pin input for the cable that the mr816x came with so I have been using the Duets cable for the mr816x. Could this be causing the problem? I also don't have a graphics card on my PC yet. And, I'm still having trouble install the driver on my PC.
I'm starting to think about selling the mr816x.
Thanks in advance guys, Joseph. |

MR816 on iMac using FW400>FW800 converter cable for 3 years now, never a single issue or drop out.
I didnt quite understand what cable ur using, neither am i on PC.
Maybe its just a configuration conflict which others may be able to help u with.
Its a fine interface with very good drivers in my experience.
Have u tried the Steinberg forum ?
Best of luck

Best of luck | I'm just using the FW400 to FW800 cable that came with my Duet.
And yes, it's a great sounding interface when it works for me.
I have searched the steinberg forum, but I will ask them as well.
Thanks for your reply.

I also had stuttering in some programs like Wavelab (I tried 2 different FW cards with TI chipset).
Try increasing the IEEE1394 buffer size from 'small (default)' to 'medium' in the YSFWUtility (Tools for MR), this worked for me.
Peter.

The MR816 should be a very solid interface. Can you please provide a list of what is in your PC? What firewire connection? That way I can try to point you to a couple of things that may help.

Hey guys, just thought I'd add that I tried uninstalling the driver and MRTools, and now I can't re-install it for the life of me. |

Might also be under Yamaha. This will be in control panel> Programs and Features.
Also, what Firewire card are you using to connect the MR816 (include part number)?
Once you have the driver uninstalled, restart the system. Then go into your device manager and go to update your firewire driver. You need to set that driver to Legacy. This should improve performance. After that, reinstall the latest MR driver from Steinberg's website. That should fix this assuming you have a decent firewire card.

I have a SIIG FireWire 800 3-Port PCI, but the thing is the prongs on the PCI card are different from any of the PCI inputs on my motherboard. Could this be the problem? Sorry, this is my first PC, I have no idea what im doing. |

2 things I can suggest you try:
1) Steinberg rather forcefully states that only TI chips FW interfaces work well with 816s. I don't know if your SIIG has TI chips or not, but that would be my first thought.
2) When I first built my system, I was also having occasional dropouts. I installed a freeware program called LatencyMon. Using that, I tracked where the dropouts were coming from. On my system, the internet adaptors (wired and wireless) were the source of the problems. Went into adaptor settings (in network connections) and disabled them. No more dropouts since then.
Good luck.

Good luck. | Yes, I second the above. It is hard telling what kind of setup that older siig is. You want this from Siig:
NN-E20012-S2
On a side note, the steinbergs work really well on current Via chipsets that are integrated into many motherboards as well.

Good luck. | Same for me. Had drops, was a wireless card. Right as rain when wireless is off. Just moved to mbp now. Works great for me on store bought pc and mbp.

Hey guys, sorry I haven't gotten back to you in a couple of days, but on the bright side, I think the problem has been fixed. First off, luckily my firewire card does have TI chips, thank god.
Changing the driver for the firewire card to "Legacy." made it possible for me to reinstall the MR816x driver. Thanks @Bondo21. Then changing the buffer size from "small" to "medium" finally got the interface to run nice and smooth. Thanks @Pschelfh.
So, yeah, I think problem solved. Thanks a lot guys for helping me.
Joseph.
