Student Dilemma

Hey Gearslutz,

This is my first post btw i am new here , i have explored this forum many times to help me with product recommendations ect which helped me decide to get my new Shure 840's which im yet to hear.....

Anyway's i am currently studying Cert IV in Sound Production at tafe in Australia (if that means anything to anyone on this forum ) and ever since i started getting cash flow i wanted to take my protools mixes home so i can work on them more. Now here's my dilemma (takes deep breath ).

I currently have a 2008 Mac Book Pro 15" 2 core Duo 2.6 Ghz i think 4 Gb ram which is going to get fixed, i imagine that has enough juice to power a 16 channel mix. PS: Due to the fact that my college doesn't have studios with monitors all the time, i mostly mix "in the cans", my mixes translate fairly decently with my old Sennheisers 205 II

Now getting down to what im buying. Im going to get Protools 10 (student version) or Full Version, according to a thread on the avid site they're virtually the same. I can get it for $325 on it's own, personally i want another audio interface however im faced with this option.

I can buy a dirt cheap second hand Tascam US 122 for $50 so i can at least drive protools ,mix and invest in a higher quallity unit later on with more channels with nicer Pre's, more stable drivers with firewire and ADAT. What do the gearslutz think of this plan ? PS: I don't like buying online, just don't feel comfortable with it

Dont worry about that computer! I run a 2.5 macbook pro with 4gb ram and I can run 40+ tracks easily with software instruments and plug ins. Pro tools can only access 4gb of ram at time since its 32 bit. If yours is a early 08 model like mine, you can put in 6gb of ram and in the future you could get a ssd. After that your machine will rock.

You are going to have a tough time mixing with phones but I guess anything could be done if you realize your limitations and know your phones weakness'.

The interface looks fine just make sure its the mkII version I believe this version has usb 2.0. (mk1= usb 1.0 sucks for audio)

Here is a important question. What are you using for storage. Pro tools does not recommend using our internal hard drive but I do on occasion for light mixes. Just make sure your internal is 7200 speed! Pro tools only supports external firewire drive.

Well im very happy to hear that about my machine ! Thankyou very much tribedescribe!

It's the older Version of the US 122 http://schmitronicshop.de/images/us122.jpg Ok thankyou very much for that info about the internal drive speed, Mine is only 5600 :/, can i still use USB 2.0 on it? Can i use a external hard drive (with a firewire connection) to get around lack of internal drive speed? I have two Firewire Ports as well although one is different.

you will need to get a external firewire hard drive. firewire 400 or 800 will be fine for you. I recommend finding a used glyph gt050 or gt050q. Either will be fine for you. They go for between $60-$120 used. The other brand you can use is G-tech. These are both compatible with pro tools and have the required oxford chip.

You might be fine with the usb 1.1 device. But in all honestly for the same price you could find a usb 2.0 device which will run better and be a safer bet with PT10. You never know till you try it out.

When you step up to a firewire device, I run my hard drive off the express card to separate the firewire buses. No daisy chaining. But that should not be a problem with your usb devices.

Good luck.
