Question Drums on Phantom Planet self-titled album

Winbender here. Long-time lurker, first time poster.

I am new to recording, so forgive any ignorance evident in this post. I am curious as to how one can get a sound similar to the drums on Phantom Planet's Dave Fridmann-produced, self-titled album. I think the best example is the song, "The Happy Ending". Clips are available at:

What makes the drums sound like that (loud, raw, almost distorting)? Preamp? Compression?

Thanks for your time.

He's an amazing producer. He gets probably my favorite drum sounds I've ever heard. Check out Mercury Rev for another band he produces....Astonishing recordings...In terms of your question. I can't help you out...ha..I would love to know these type of things

FWIW I believe that record was engineered by Tom Weir here:

I know he's worked with them on several projects, but I'm not sure if he was involved with their self-titled album or not.

Anyone have any clues about the drums sounds?......

Tom has a sleeve from a single (vinyl!) of "Happy Ending" up on the wall with a thank you & credit to him on it. But I don't know anything about the drum sounds.

We could use David Fridmann around here.

Hey, I could be wrong but when I hear that record, I think the kit distortion sounds like bit reduction.

It's a pretty distinctive sound. There are a lot of plugins that will do that.

fun band.
