Funk/Soul Drum Micing

This is how I approach it.

One Mic.

And this is how it sounds.

Sounds quite good!

You only recorded this with one mic?
Can you tell us which mic and what position etc.?

Cheers!

It sounds like... one mic recording it to me. I don't know, and I hope you're ok with honesty, but that didn't really do anything for me. Snare did have a good 80s/90s break beat kind of tone to it, like Fresh Prince or Bell Biv DiVoe.

Check out some Daptone Records albums on youtube. That's some nice one-mic drums. Shure 55s or EV635a.

I kept it kind of thin to leave room for a bass/everything else

just a ribbon mic in a really dry room, still experimenting with placement.

Its level with snare's body but points down a little to avoid the cymbals. I took off the left mounted tom to get it in that spot.

loads of eq and slammed compression to make it sound both better and worse.

The original file is lot higher in fidelity but I wanted a rougher sound.

Fooled around with some 70s funk drum sounds today. This uses a D112 on kick, Beta87A on snare, and AKG C430 (SDC) overhead recorded into Logic. Kick and snare panned center, OH panned right to give it a subtle stereo spread. Some transient shaping, compression, EQ, and reverb used.
