Clarification on a Bruce Swedien quote

Reading a SoS interview with Bruce Swedien on the recording of Thriller and he says:

"...I’ll use cardioid or omni mics for the Blumlein pairs — omnis work great — but bi-directional mics make it a little difficult..."

I would've thought omnis would make it more difficult (or impossible) because there's no off-axis rejection or at the very least have comb filtering/phase issues. And cardioids? Wouldn't that just be a X/Y pair?

Blumlein is two figure 8 mics only. Maybe what he was saying was taken out of context.

Omni can be used for the "center" mic, with a fig 8 for the sides, in a sort of Blum. config.

Maybe a typo or poor dictation but he specifically talks about M/S being "useless" to him.

So yeah not sure. The guys getting up there too.
