Vocals and Pro Tools Plug ins?

First off here is the raw clip : Download edwinCALLE-RAW-SAM-ROSEE.mp3 from Sendspace.com - send big files the easy way

I need a lesson mixing rap Vocals. I have attached a raw clip above. Maybe someone can take a listen and tell me what I can do in pro tools to get the vocals as mixable and crispy as possible.

I know vocals need reverb, compression - ETC.... Could you recommend an alternative to WAVES? I used that in the past, but could not come across a "USED" one for MAC OSX (If you know what I mean)

MIC: AKG C214
INTERFACE: DUET 2
DAW: PRO TOOLS

the way you recorded this vocal way to hot (hot = loud) next time try to record the vocals a little quieter

1. Noise reduction/Low end EQ roll off
2. EQ off trouble frequencies by scanning the frequency band (tutorial here: HOW TO EQ YOUR VOCALS? - The Jokerr Explains... UA Ep 2 HQ Official - YouTube)
3. Use compression (tutorial here: WHAT THE HELL IS COMPRESSION? The Jokerr Explains... UA Ep 3 HQ Official - YouTube)
4. Any extra EQ you want add here, to add shine to the vocal etc
5. DeEsser (tutorial here: How to use a De-esser on vocals - YouTube)

as far as plugins go, theres a few threads in this site mentioning a bunch of free plugins that do the job (heres one: Top List of Free Plugins)

here is what I did with your sample vocal using the same steps I described: LimeLinx - Home - Free File Hosting and Sharing - Audio, Video, Image

The use of multiple compressors the default one followed by the BF76 will do justice

Regarding plugins, you don't need any 3rd party plugins other than the stock Pro Tools ones.
  • EQIII is a great EQ, use that one.
  • BF76 with a fast attack and ultra fast release for just catching the peaks and get some grit from the fast release followed by Dyn3 for leveling out the vocals can work well.
  • Don't overlook the lo-fi plugin. Very very little Distortion and Saturation (like 0.1 to 0.3) can give you some fatness and even more grit. Maybe in parallel (used on an Aux as a send effect or just by duplicating the vocal track) and not serial.
  • D-Verb on one of the two Room settings for just a little ambience.
  • Plus maybe some short delay, very "invisible" with lotsa high end rolloff using the stock Digi Delays.

Yep.

Or put that BF76 on a bus with all buttons in and bring just a touch up underneath for body.

Need to follow the above advise and leave a little room when you track to give yourself some....room to move.
