Home Studio Upgrade

Hello from France,

I'm looking for some advices to upgrade my home-studio.

Right now, my sound seems a bit "muddy" to me, or lacking something I can't put a name on. To put it blankly, what is coming through my monitors is very different from what I hear in front of my instruments (in a bad way).
I started recording 5 years ago, have learned a lot from scratch, but I'm still a beginner. So I was wondering what I might have missed. Is it only my skills or maybe better gear could help a bit ?

Here is my latest recording : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iPT4NEVnVMM

Current setup

Mics
Lauten Horizon
Cascade Gomez
Sennheiser MD421
Sennheiser E906
2 Neumann KM84

Preamp
Dav BG1
SPL Goldmike
Avalon U5

Interface Card
MOTU 828 MK2

Monitoring system
Fostex PM-2 MK2

I play and/or record a variety of instruments, from guitars to mandolin, bass to cajon, autoharp to banjos or dobros.
My biggest issue is trying to record electric guitars and drums.

Thanks a lot for your advises

Thomas

Send a message via ICQ to muziekschuur
Sennheiser or Beyer Dynamic drumkit.

Two SM57's.

Two obvious possibilities:

Trying to make all the tracks sound very 'big' out of context, then trying to mix all of these 'big' tracks together usually equals a muddy sound.

Bad or no room treatment.

I don't track drumkits that often, and I can borrow some mics for a session. But you're right muziekschuur, I should at least have 2 SM57 !

Bill@WelcomeHome : I indeed try to make all my tracks sound "big out of context" before going into mixing.
So, basically, what you say is that I must accept that my guitar don't need to have big bottom, my mandolin huge mids etc... because, in the end, it will better fit in the mix.
Make sense, though it will be hard to force myself not looking for the nicest sounds out of each instruments, but the most usefull ones.

And my room isn't treated. :/
Well, at least I know what must be done.
