Any Suggestions?!?!?!

I'm about to purchase an apogee duet 2, shure sm7b, and an Avalon m5. What else should I invest in to make my sound better?

What style of music and what type of voice are you recording?

i think you've got a killer start with that line up of equipment. Some room treatment couldn't hurt and some good monitors too.

Time to develop your ear (I know, I know - it's GS!) Looks like you're investing in some quality gear - be sure to put the time in to make your purchases worthwhile. Good luck!

I wouldn't get the M5 right off the bat, just use the duets pres for a while and save your money for a later purchase.

I agree. I'd say try out the duet pres and see what you think. They sound pretty awesome IMO.

What style of music are you doing? Treating the room would be the next place to go.

I'm not overly familiar with the M5 (used it in a few studios before), but I totally agree with the opinion that you should try the Duet pre's first. I don't think the M5 is gonna blow your mind in comparison. You might be able to put that extra cash toward a pricier mic or some other toy.

Maybe the U5 instead to supplement as a great bass DI.

I think a GR me-1nv would be an excellent 1st high end pre that will last a life time. Nice gain for the sm7b as well. I also have a 6176 which is awesome, but the 610 and sm7b can be a little more challenging pairing.

Thick sound with thick sound pretty much, it's not a clean and transparent chain if that's what your looking for.

Well it all depends on what style you want I suppose, the colour / pre / compressor thing is usually cool for rock or a coloured pop vibe.. normally though I suggest getting something free of colour and just dirty it up a bit in the mix.

For the best sort of high end but cheap, I would go for DAKING personally. It's a bit of a can do it all.. I use API mainly but hence my Signature I do a lot of rock and metal.

Although I would say out of everything, the pre-amps are probably the least of your concerns..

You need good Mic's, SM7b works for some and not others.. It ain't the holy grail I'm afraid.. Duet is a good interface, but like someone else says there is nothing really wrong with the Duet Pre's.. It won't stop you making commercial grade material even though we are on gearslutz..

What will stop you making commercial grade material is:

Crap monitors
Crap untreated rooms
Crap plugins and tools in general
Knowledge of what your doing..

I remixed some crap I did many years ago with an SM58 and an Mbox Pro.. It sounded sweet when I remixed it.. Made a complete ass of it at the time..

I`ve been downsizing my setup for the last 7 years... my current setup consists of:

iMac 2.7gHz
Duet 2
Avalon 737s
Equator D5 monitors

I record lots of vocals ranging in many diverse styles from rock, hip hop, pop, sacred, classical, etc... male and female vocals. The 737 has handled all of it for the last 12 years and its phenomenal as a bass DI so thats my recommendation for you. The Duet 2 pres are clean and will get the job done but for flexibility, the 737 gets my vote. I own two of them and use them for mastering as well.

Again, what artists? Beyonce has been known to use quite a coloured vocal.. A Neumann U47 into something like an La610..

Then again quite a few popular R&B / Hip hop chart hitters use mic's like Neumann U87's..

What's your budget?
