AudioBox, Scarlett 18i6, and an M-Audio DMP3 Alternative

Hi, and Thanks in Advance!

I have an AudioBox, Scarlett 18i6, and an M-Audio DMP3.

My main use is Voice Over work, so clean, quiet pre-amps are extremely important to me. I also need a preamp that can deliver 48v phantom power and can run from an external battery for my Run&Gun video production needs.

The AudioBox and the Scarlett can both run stand-alone and run fine off an external battery... No problems there.

The AudioBox gives me a little more gain, but the Scarlett has a bit cleaner/quieter pre-amps, but with a little less gain. Because self noise is my main criteria, the Scarlett is my preference in the portable arena.

Here is my quandary; My M-Audio provides the best performance of any of my gear under $600, but it requires 9v AC :-(

So I can't run it for Run&Gun video (ENG) type shooting using an external battery to power it (that I know of).

My main quest is to find a portable solution that delivers the same quality and characteristics as the M-Audio DMP3.

I have read some negative reviews of the M-Audio portable solutions... do any of the portable M-Audio gear have the same pre-amps as the DMP3?

What Alternatives are there that will give me the same quality as the DMP3?

Does anyone know how I can power the DMP3 via external battery?

Thanks Again!!

have you tried a cloudlifter to get some extra clean gain with your focusrite?

You know you like the Focusrite the cloudlifter would give you more gain to work with and for a portable solution it just needs phantom power from your interface.

I'm not particularly fond of the M Audio stuff bad QC/past experiences using and selling their stuff.

Hi,

I do love the Focusrite, and it's pretty close to the DMP3 in the clean pre-amp department, but I would like it a little cleaner.

Great suggestion as to cloudlifter... I don't know what it is, but I'll search it.

Thanks!

Looks like the cloudlifter is designed for ribbon mics and I use all condensers.

I would like to find an all-in-one portable solution (no additional components)that has the same clean pre-amps as the DMP3.

I mean the DMP3 is almost totally transpearent... it is really awesome! and it's very reasonably priced.

I mean it is better than most of the expensive audio gear that we use in the field... but it uses 9v AC, which I can't use in an untethered scenario.

I could get a DC to AC inverter, but now we are adding weight and I'm not sure how big of a battery I would have to use.

I'm using a battery roughly the size of 2 decks of cards. An AC inverter might not be very efficient and require a much bigger/heavier battery, which would defeat my purposes.

Any other ideas guys??

Thanks!
