You should read 'Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance'. Audio production is a discipline that definitely benefits from embracing both the 'classical' and the 'romantic' ...

Are there any books on the history of recording? How it began, what they used how it changed and was molded and formed into what it is today,

Books I've read recently and recommend...

1] Mixing Secrets (Mike Senior)
2] Mixing Audio / Concepts, Practices and Tools (Roey Izhaki)
3] Modern Recording Techniques (David Miles Huber & Robert E. Runstein)
4] How to Build a Small Budget Recording Studio from Scratch (Mike Shea & F. Alton Everest)

The Mixing Engineer's Handbook by Bobby Owsinski.
Modern Recording Techniques 6th edition by David Miles Huber and Robert E. Runstein.

Awesome thread. Really helpful. The books that blew my mind were The Mixing Engineer's Handbook by Bobby Owsinski and Mixing Secrets by Mike Senior.

The Handbook is really good for reading up on the history of recording - interviews with loads of producers from the 60's and 70's. It's also great for going into the correct approach when starting a mix. This helped me out massively. Also loads of techniques from producers in there.

Mike Senior's book is more for getting the best out of your equipment/studio/mixing environment. Really detailed in places.

Both are awesome reads. I've heard loads about the Izhaki book, so I'm going to pick that up soon. Especially now that he released the updated second edition around a year ago.
