Sontronics Mics

Anyone heard of these mics?
I seen them in my local Pro audio store and in the new EM magazine.
They look great for the price, actually expensive looking.
They are in the 6 to 7hundred dollar range.
I might borrow one from Russos music center to see what they sound like.

So what's the report? I just started looking at this one. I need a new vocal mic.
Actually my link doesn't take you to the one I was thinking about but look at the Helios.

Have you checked out the reviews on their site? Here is the link in case you haven't.

Hi All,

I have both Sigma and STC 2 and rate both quite highly.

I demo'd the STC 2 along with a Braunner Phantom and Rodes (can't remeber which one). Nicest was the Phantom BUT not £1200 nicer !!!!!! The STC 2 was extremely respectable and actually got used over the weekend to record a radio play. It has a solid feel too.

The Sigma (fig 8) is a lovely looking mic and is "warm" and highlights mids over top end. Makes for a smooth sound esp on female or nasally vox. It's also good for acoustic guitar. It's a ribbon mic so handle with care !!!!

Did not get the chance to demo this against another ribbon but used it during a session and the client loved the results so got two there and then !

There is no pattern switching on either but for the money I'm not surprised.

Hi guys,

I’m the Product Specialist with Music Marketing (which means it’s my job to know the stuff, not sell it), and I wanted to offer a bit of information about the Sontronics microphones.

Obviously, I’ll probably seem biased, so I’ll do my best to stick to the facts and avoid pitching too many opinions. I’m also not going to be the guy to say how they compare to other brands. You can check out the reviews section of their website to check out some press reviews and testimonials.

I’ve been reading through the forums and I’ve seen several requests for some sample recordings, so one of the things we really want to do is set up a few mics here at the office and make some samples. We’ve got to figure out the logistics behind tracking, file compression, and hosting, and I don’t have a timeline in mind, but we’re going to shoot for “soonish”. Also, we’ll have to figure out what kinds of sources we have available, but we should be able to gather a decent selection of toys.

So if there are any particular mics on any particular instruments that you guys want to hear, let me know and I’ll see what I can arrange. I can’t promise we’ll be able to address every request, but we’ll try our best. I know there’s a lot of interest in the Sigma – it’s certainly eye catching, and an active ribbon microphone is probably a bit of a rare tool to have in the arsenal. We all love the mic up here, so we’ll probably start there, but let us know what you guys want to hear, and we’ll try hook you up. We’ll also list the entire signal chain so that you know exactly what you’re hearing.

Also, let me clear up any confusion – we distribute Sontronics (and several other lines) in the US as well as Canada, so they shouldn’t be difficult to find. Some of our customers include Guitar Center, Sam Ash, Musician’s Friend, and Sweetwater, and you can see the complete list of our resellers at our website.

I can’t promise that individual stores actually have stock, but if you guys in the US are interested in Sontronics, these stores can get them.

That would be great Dave. I don't know what other forums you might be looking over, but the same request for audio samples seems to be everywhere. There is definitely a buzz but there seems to be a bit of a shortage of examples out there. Thanks for your reply on this and the the "soonish" sample forth coming.

Actually, Gearslutz was the first forum that came to mind when we were brainstorming about getting active online. So you guys are sort of our 'pilot project'.

I think that it'll be a great way to demonstrate how they sound, and I'm looking forward to the experiment. I think you're right about the buzz too - Sontronics displayed in our booth at NAMM this year and they had a pretty constant flow of traffic. It sure doesn't hurt that the Sigma is so eye-catching... now the trick is to show that it's not just a pretty face.

As far as recording some demos, I think our plan is to do the tracking next week. I just need to go retrieve (and probably restring) my trusty Taylor acoustic, and we'll see about recording that, maybe an electric guitar, and we'll try get a male and female vocal sample as well. I'm shooting for having the first samples available for listening in the next 2-3 weeks*. Depending on the response, hopefully it can be an ongoing project.

Hi Dave, we are Ribbon mic freaks and the Sigma looks interetsting. I looked on the MF and Sweet websites and nothing came up for Sontronics in the search engines.

I think you'll find it will be tough to sell allot of these unless you have dealers with stock where users can demo at the store or through mail order. Hope you do not mind the honest advice. Good luck with everything. Shoot me a PM if you can.

You're absolutely right, and I should have been more clear.

The companies we deal with in the US *can* order Sontronics from us easily. Of course, that's an entirely different thing than them actually carrying the line and having stock in the stores. Of the chains I mentioned in my first post, currently only Sam Ash will generate a hit on Sontronics if you search their site. However, if you went into any of the stores I mentioned and inquired, you could probably arrange a custom order very easily.

This of course assumes that you already want to buy one, so we want to do what we can to show off how the mics sound, and help those who are curious about the line decide if it's the right tool for them.

So we're at the beginning of something here, and everybody knows that the microphone market is a crowded landscape. The first step for us is to record some samples for you. We might not be able to get a demo unit in your neighbourhood music store just yet, but we're working on it, and hopefully this is a good solution in the short term.

Hi Dave!

Ribbon microphones always have been a favorite on horns so putting samples of a tenor/alto sax and trumpet/flugelhorn thru your SIGMA could be quite a good idea.
Just my 2 cents...

Victor.

I have had excellent results with the M-Audio Sputnik. It sounds amazing...

Haven't heard the Sontronics mics so I can't comment. I actually sold my Rode K2 to get a Sputnik and I am much happier with it. You can hear some clips at this link.

Scroll down to the Sputnik clips.

+1 (into a Great River M1ENV/RME)

Mine replaced a Rode NTK and I haven't had to reach for the EQ or de-esser since!

Hi all,

We had a great recording session a while back, with a very straightforward signal chain. We went with a female jazz vocal into a number of mics, going from the mics direct into a MOTU Traveler and recorded into Cubase 4.

We want to get a few more samples together - preferably at least drums and acoustic guitar (and we'd love to get some brass and woodwinds - it's just a matter of finding the musicians) - but nobody wants to bring their nice instruments out in the middle of a nasty Canadian winter.

We'd like to get all our samples together before things go live, so that you can check these mics out on a variety of sources, but if it looks like there's going to be a substantial delay before we can co-ordinate the other tracking sessions, we'll probably get the vocal sessions edited and up for your listening pleasure.

*Brrrrump*

This is an old thread, but I want to comment because I've been using a Sontronics Omega for two years now.

It is absolutely one of the most pleasant vocal mics I've ever gotten my hands on. It has a very, very clean, flat sound to it and has done well on a number of voices. If you get a very loud singer in there close up, the distortion it produces is very musical and I've used it before on a vocal double as an effect. Hell, I'm not even sure if it's supposed to do that, but it still kicks arse.

It pairs very well with a great number of preamps (UA LA-610, Rane VP12, Symetrix 302, RNP).

I wouldn't say that it is "built like a tank"... but I'm pretty sure you could bludgeon someone to death with it, or stab a zombie through the heart.

I have the SCT-2. its pretty good, i've not really got much to compare it against, but i've never had any major issues other than the shockmount which is a bit difficult to get the mic into, and recently mine hasn't been keeping the mic in.

I have 3 of the small condenser ST1, a matched pair and a single, all with both cardiod and omni capsules and they are awsome, especially on pipe organ.
