Modify master pot on SM Pro Audio MPatch5.1

Hi there I am running an RME Fireface 400 connected to an Mpatch 5.1 monitor controller and Genelec 8040's. The Mpatch 5.1 is a great solid passive alternative to the SPL which I have used also. My only issue with it is that it's master volume pot is stepped and has very little difference in volume.

Unfortunately to calibrate these speakers to 79db for mix reference in my room, I can't have the RME matrix mixer output to unity, I have to bring the level down to -10db which lets me have the master pot at 1 o'clock which gives me a little room to turn it down, sadly there is minimal volume differences.

My question now is compared to the master pot on an SPL box which is variable not stepped, this has caused me alot of trouble, and can't have my signal near unity before it gets to the box. Is there a suitable pot I can use to replace this ?

I've tried searching the forum and there was only one related thread, it was close to what I need but not exact, I don't want a stepped pot as it will likely give me the same trouble. If I have my pot at 1 o'clock I should be able to have the RME mixer at unity or just under for headroom.

Hopefully this can be resolved somehow, having it down to -10 doesn't seem to cause too much trouble for me personally I think but I should really fix it.

If it's as simple as jumping onto Mouser and ordering some Alps pot that would be perfect !

Thanks.

The SPL unit is not passive, the master knob controls an opamp so you certainly have more range.

The SMPRO unit is totally passive as you know (no need for power as well)

The switched attenuator has the following values for the 12 positions:
Switch

0, -1, -2, -3, -4, -5, -7, -9, -11, -14, -19, -31dB

What I would normally recommend is setting the loudest volume you would ever listen to as UNITY on your interface ZERO on the MPATCH5.1 and reduce the volume on your amp or speakers so that is the MAX.

That way you will get much more control over the level in your situation.

OK so your suggestion is to get my interface output back to unity, set the knob position that gets me to 79db and reduce the output on the speakers ? I have a pair of active genelec 8040's i'll have to see if i can do this from the speakers.

Yes the steps on the pot don't see to have a great difference, interesting you found that information.

And yes passive is my preference as I run a low power setup.

I would still like to try and mod it with a variable pot though if I can :(

There is no gain control on the back of the genelecs, its just got a trimpot for the bass tilt and dip switches :( Any other suggestion ?

This is why think changing to a variable pot will work best for me rather than stepped because there is very little difference in the steps, and I would still have to come down from unity on the interface output to customise the position to 79db still

You'll never know if you hit the 79dB position unless you check it every time you move it with a calibrated signal.

I always put markers next to the dial. Real desks have the monitoring values built in which is handy.

Hi guys thanks for the support. Here is what I found

I did in fact didn't realise the trimpot on the back of the genelecs were for sensitivty control I should RTFM, these are my first active monitors. The factory default it's set at -6 which is 100db which is insanely loud as default I reckon, I bought this back to just over 0 and was able to bring my outputs back to -2 for headroom and left the master pot where it is. Again I do apologise for this.

I might have to add ARK on top of this also because I don't have the DSP Room correction Genelecs as even at mix centre the left channel I had to bring down a touch so something is going on there, even though they are both at the same distance and angled the same.

Thanks for your help on the matter.
