drum tracking - mono or stereo?

I've been experimenting with recording drums with a condensor mic and SM57 at the same time (I like minimal drum recording and my omega only has 2 inputs). Question - I've always recorded tracks in mono, but now that I'm using 2 mics to record a source, should I use stereo tracks for them? If so, what's the advantage...in mixing? Any help would be great. Thanks.

I'd keep each mic on its own mono track so you can adjust the relative levels between them, as well as the panning if you want come mix time.

Are you using the 57 in the kick and condensor for overhead / whole kit?

I tried that, but I didn't like the sound. One thing I liked the sound of that someone here recommended) was the sm57 as an overhead right in front of the kit, and then the condensor on the floor 6-10 feet away.

Hum. Do you have a small mixer? If you have why don´t you get a cheap drum mic ( atm25, d112) use the 57 for snare, the condenser for mono overhead, mix and then stereo out to your omega. Or if you want stereo overhead ( it will give you a better image, you can hear toms going from left to right, the hh in it´s place, stereo cymbals, etc.) get a pair of oktavas MK12. Cheap.

If you like the mic's set up the way you said, keep them mono (with the ability to pan them if for some reason you feel like it later).

I'm just trying to get a pretty good sound with what I have...I'm going for a minimal/lo fi vibe anyway. My friend suggested getting another SM57, and this could be cool for a stereo imaging of the drums if they were used as left and right overheads I'm sure. Thanks for the other replies as well everyone.
