You can get "silk" from comps too. Try and audition for yourself as that's one of the marketing buzzwords.

Sorry to butt in with the inevitable generic comment... Eq on hats is great/difficult but its the sound source that will always provide the majority of the silkyness or whatever youre after... what % of the final total silkyness are you looking to get from your choice of eq (seperate from the final eq setting itself)

No intention to come off like a douch or start a tedious flamewar btw

+1 on demoing aswell btw

I always find that HH must be recorded well with mic placement. It never turns out quite right otherwise.

I agree. Try an API 2500 with high thrust engaged with a quick attack and release set to the tempo of the song. Ooooh so 'SILKY'!

While this may be true, I wouldn't want to use 1/2 of my $2,500 - 2500 for a Hi Hat. Unless you are talking plugins.

Try to put some tape saturation plug in. Like "DUY". That works for me!

I'd go with the tried and true sonics of oldies, just filter off HF. A 6 dB/ octave LPF will soften and bring the silk

An AKG C414 into a Neve 33420/1272 preamp. No other EQ necessary.

Another machine drums & samples user here. First I do careful LPF to make it 'silky', then I boost the highs a little with a Siemens W295b. Biutiful.

A more smoky / old vinyl kind of silk: I boost the 'presence' and cut the highs with a Chandler Tone Control.

Edit: Sorry, neither 500.

Yes it has nice character. It softens transients almost as if it was tube based. Silky hats depend on the source more than on eq. You can't eq nasty sounding sample into a smooth nice thing. So choose your samples well or record nice (and thin) hats with great mic and you're done.

a other kind of silk El8 in dist 3 /tape mode with the light slighty on the yellow if too much it sound like a harmonic exciter on the highs , unpleasant.
It tame transients and add 2d and 3rd harmonics.

1/4 note in milliseconds = 60,000 / song BPM

...but you really should do it by ear. All units act differently and you can't really rely on numbers too much for attack/release settings.

However, the above formula is great for calculating delay and predelay times!

Electronic hats can feel pretty offensive when you are working on a track for hours trying get blend of all sorts of non-acoustic instruments tracked separately - no room sound, no 'ensemble'. I am often working on getting more smoothness with electronic hats --- specifically they don't have that overlapping sustain of acoustics played well - I use a Moog ladder in HP on a 909 and sampled (MPC) hats - SO if you specifically want an EQ then my apologies for derailing the thread - 12db / 8ve is more extreme than has been suggested - if you want a 500 module and can see a filter as an EQ in the wider sense then I believe this is an excellent tool for what you are after as well as for electronic music production in general. I also agree that a compressor is nice for softening i.e. moving more towards 'silky' - I am using a Distressor for this same hat smoothness and find its subtle fuzziness quite appealing in addition to the transient taming which seems to aid the quest.

Digital Hi hats are the bane of my existence. Start with an appropriate sample/sound. if playing back a sample (exs24 in logic for example) play with filter cutoff to tame harshness and increase envelope attack to soften the sound. Then use any eq plugin to sculpt.
