Focusrite Saffire vs Motu Ultralite

I recently bought a Saffire LE and am pleased with the sound for the money.

However, when recording (even with no input) there is a sort of 'digital chatter' which is low level probably -100dB or so , but I have to say that I am a little worried that if I was to turn up the gain on several quietly recorded tracks it would become audible.

Would anyone care to comment on the a/d d/a side of things comparing the saffire to the ultralite as I am thinking of maybe changing.... or maybe I will push the boat out and get a FF 400.

example

could you pust a sound example of this "digital chatter"?
if i understood you right, this is also audible on your recordings. just crank up the preamp gain and record a few seconds. than post the file here and we can give it a listen.

i'm using the first saffire (not the LE version), but i'm not experiencing what you describe.

and i don't think an ultralite would be a worthwile upgrade. i'm also not very happy about the motu customer service - they didn't ever answer my request emails.
focusrite has a better customer support in my experience.

saffire.aif

Here is a sample recording made with no input attached.

Like I say it is low level around -100dB but if you gain it up a bit it is clearly audible.

i can't hear any uncommon noise, even on highest volume....and there's also no noise to see in a wave editor....

every device produces a minimal amount of "noise", as well as every preamp.

but in this case i can't find any noise that should hold back any recording.
