Looking for a mic to capture... lots of things

Hello there.

I have been playing music for a very long time, and now the last two years I've been busy with improvising and composing a little as well. I've also been tinkering a little with some DAWs, and to keep it simple, I want to capture the acoustic instruments I play to use in my works.
I am mainly a percussionist, that is, my main instrument is Marimba. However, I also play a lot of piano lately, and I would like to capture both.

However, I am new to recording and microphones. I wonder if:
-Someone could give some general advice about what type of microphone would work best for these instruments. I only intend to buy one microphone to capture both instruments (maybe I want to buy two for stereo) since I only have a small amount of money.
-I have no idea how much money it will cost, but I can tell that I don't really have more money than $150 right now.
-I do have an EMU Tracker Pre with two inputs which I believe could be used to connect the cables to the computer.

Thank you for your time,

~WM

Get the best mic you can afford, all your efforts will be better for it. I'd be looking at Oktava MK-012 or 219/319 with that budget. (These do require phantom power). Good luck.

a small diaphragm condenser would be my first choice, followed by a ribbon. Consider buying used to maximize the value of your purchase.

Oktava MK-012 is a small diaphragm condenser with numerous optional capsules that you could add on later as your budget permits. These mics have mods available for them if you are so inclined and want to squeeze more out of them. Look to OktavaMod, JJ Audio and Bill Sitler's Audio Service among others. Bill Sitler offers a kit to mod them yourself if you are so inclinded.

You will find these mics for in the close to $100 range on the used market. Make sure you get a set that includes the pad, because they are out there. Be patient.

Or buy something else!

I think Cad e70 AKA Superlux S241 compare well to more expenssive SDCs. But look at Jamroom Sessions and Cliplator and make up you own mind.

In that price range and for those uses, it's hard to beat the CAD M179.

Highly recommend the Line Audio CM3 SDC. Next would be Oktava MK012. Plenty of used MK102s out there.

The CM3 is a relatively new product from Sweden. Do a search here for it. I bought mine for about $170 USD incl shipping from Europe from Line Audio - Swedish Made High Quality Audio Products - Available at NoHype Audio.

CAD M179 is a good recommendation as well for a great budget, utility LDC.
