First Steps on Cubase Artist 6.5

Hi guys! first of all I´d like to thank you all for the help you´ve already given me selecting gear and software, after a long time saving money and connecting all the stuff, I´m finally about to start recording in my own humble home studio. As a SW piece, I´ve chosen Cubase, since I can´t afford Protools by the moment and since this is only a personal home studio, thought it would be more than enough, and finally bought one of the Drum plug-ins some of you guys recommended (FX expansion).

So the thing is, now that I have everything set up, I sit in fromt of my mac, open the Cubase, and find myself in a point where I don´t know what to do or where to start!, I tried to record my voice, and it turns out that its recorded mono, I mean, the Saffire Pro 14 only gets the sound in one of the sides, so my first question is, how can I listen to myself in stereo mode? I´ve always recorded with Protools in pro studios and I remembered always listening to myself in stereo, what I don´t know is if i was actually recorded in stereo, or if this has something to do with the routing or so, I´d appreciate any help you can give me, thanks!!

The human voice is a mono source.

Did you only use one mic?

Are you recording to a stereo track?

Read the manual?

Hey! thanks for the reply, yas I added a Stereo track, I´m using aRODE NT1A connected to the front imput 1 of my focusrite saffire Pro14, still in the Cubase I only get sound on one side, I tried to fix it in the MixControl SW that comes with the Saffire, and yes I´ve gone through the manual, though for a complete newbie on this, it can be very confusing!

Yes everything is working correctly except you should have added a mono track.

So if I add a mono track then I´ll be able to listen to it in stereo on my headphones? why is it that in Protools you can record in stereo a vocal? (I´ve seen on the screen the two tracks, at least that´s what I remember!) thanks guys!

What it would appear you have done is:

-Create a stereo track
-Assign an input to the track (stereo track will probably default to 2 inputs since it's looking to track a stereo source)
-Plug in a single mic (which is normal when recording a mono source)
-Record your mono source to only the right or left side of the stereo track
-Play back the recording of a stereo file where one side contains audio and the other side contains dead air

You probably only recorded to half of a stereo track, which means that only the right or left side will play back actual sound. Stereo tracks usually mean that two signals are contained within a ganged track, each hard panned left and right. Since only one of the two tracks actually had anything recorded to it you only hear through one side of the stereo spectrum.

You need to record to a mono track, which will let you pan the signal to anywhere in the stereo spectrum (meaning it can play back on both sides at once if you like).

Please note that this does not make a mono recording stereo; it only means that it is a mono recording playing back through two speakers.

I understand, and how do you convert a voice recording that´s obviously made on a single mic, meaning its mono, into a stereo track? duplicating it? or is there a way (as I saw in Protools) to get the recording in L/R directly from the mono source (condenser mic)?

Thanks for your help guys.

A mono track will default to the center of your stereo field, so by default it should play through both sides of your master (stereo) outs.

Either:

a) export the recorded track as individual wav files (NOT joint stereo) and use only the portion that actually has audio

or

b) bus your stereo track to a mono aux or group channel

"a" is really your best bet.

If any of this is confusing, and I don't mean to sound condescending, you should really just read through the manual and follow the basic steps described within.

Good luck.
