Spectro-analysis of mp3s in Audacity

First off, apologies if this is not the appopriate sub-forum to post this - BUT - Low End Theory seems to be the only sub I am permitted to post in.

Attached are Audacity wave forms of two mp3s from my collection. What I would like to know is: WHAT HAPPENED, lol! to the one on the bottom?!? Seriously that is one messed-up lookng mp3. It's actually a 256kbps file, where as the one on top is a 192k. I have 128s with more extended highs than the one at bottom. And most of my home-grown mp3s are CD-rips at 256k constant, full stereo. Their spectrograms roll off smoothly until just a tick above 20kHz(similar to the one at top).

Thanks for any input on this, and moderators, I have repeatedly sent e-mails to you and the admins to find out why I am not permitted to post on some forums here.

Thanks

Comparing spectrums of mp3s is pointless.

Actually my friends and family think I have the best sounding mp3 collection around! I've aggressively replaced as many low-bitrate files and higher-bitrate but remasters with CD rips and album versions from Amazon as I can. My entire collection is mp3Gained to a level that allows the music to breathe.

My avatar speaks for itself.

So the question remains: What happened to the mp3 represented by the bottom spectro? It had the higher bitrate of the two. Encoding error?

I feel your pain, I know why you feel the way you do about mp3. The media and the govt kept saying "Saddam was behind 9/11" enough times and people believed it!

Same goes for mp3 - that format rose to relevance around the same time all this digital remastering was taking place. And that became the source for probably 3/4 of all mp3 files for sale on Amazon, iTunes, or wherever.

So it stuck in peoples' minds(like you guys) that mp3 compressed music files in both a data-wise and dynamic sense.

Sorry to disappoint you - but like Sadam & 9/11 - the connection between mp3 and dynamic range compression is a falsehood.

STOP:
-Encoding mp3s at 128kbps joint stereo
-Encoding or rip from "digitally remastered" reissued CDs

If you can avoid doing just those things, and run your mp3 collection throug a volume leveler app like mp3Gain, it will sound just fine.

It took me a few years to learn all these things, but once I did I became a very shrewd and wise customer when it comes to creating portable files of my music collection.
