physically protecting my monitors

So i own a pair of HS80's and i'm looking for some type of grill or cage to protect the front. I've searched everywhere and found nothing. Do you know any solutions? or any DIY solutions?

I don't want any of my friends or siblings pocking or stabbing the woofer.

You should probably just enclose them in a wooden box and just poke a hole in the front of the box and feed a piece of string through with a paper cup on the end. Cup mixing: all the pros do it.

Easy ghetto method...

Sheet metal the same width of the monitors bent to a 90 degree angle. Kinda like a book end but the monitor sits on top of the horizontal part of the sheet metal and the vertical part protects the speaker cone itself. Obviously you can't use them like this but at least it will keep them fairly safe while you aren't around.

Car audio places tend to sell grill covers in various sizes. Simply screw in. I put some rubber washers between the grills but not even sure that was necessary, i just had those handy.

You might want to take your monitors apart to make sure you aren't drilling into anything but the wood.

a friend of mine had plastic covers made for hers she put over the top of them when they weren't in use. you can purchase the plastic sheeting at a hardware store, heat it and fold it to a box shape.

but honestly, the cardboard boxes they came in would work just as well.

just cover them when not in use.

otherwise, death threats and fists of fury seem to work well.

in my small room, with the monitors placed correctly for the room, and the desk placed in front of the monitor stands, the monitors end up back further than most could reach.

That just screams... "I don't trust you."

But I like it.

I use a round metal (with rubber edge) speaker grill from GC (might have been Sam Ash) for my JBL LSR sub as its floor level. I attached it to a solid book-end and it's perfectly centered around the speaker. They may have smaller sizes more suited to monitors? I believe these were in the live sound dept.

loool that looks ridiculous, but it may just be the solution.

but i'm thinking of using this Speaker Grill, 8" Black Metal 2 Piece Speaker Grill, SG-M8 ....

Might try to glue or screw it on top on the woofer, but I don't know how much it's going to affect the sound since the grill holes are so tight. Any other solutions would be helpful.

Do you have studio mice?

Could always pick up some expanded metal mesh at your local metal shop. That's what they use on the floors of many landscape trailers. Clamp a piece between a couple of 2x4's and bend it to whatever shape you want.

Now for those really pesky folks, just add an electric fence shock controller to this setup.

I did that once around a beehive... worked GOOD, too!

The other thing which I am hesitant to mention, for fear of the ridicule of my peers... but... I would swear that after I installed the wire guard, geez but something felt better about the sound coming out of the speakers... this was a definite, definable featherweight-subtle nuance that I noticed, at least I think I did...

There was a post here a while back where a GS was trying a set of Adams A7s at his studio. This drummer comes in with a hoodie and decides to drag the metal tip on the hoodie drawstring against the ribbon tweeter, and it gets drawn into the ribbon tweeter....

The OP asked a question worth thinking about.

In my case it was much more prosaic... the Tannoys were going to be stage monitors, at foot level, and I just wanted to keep the Doc Martens out of the woofers. The improvement in the sonics was purely serendipity.

But this does raise a trivial issue... in olden times, there was always some kind of foam or cloth cover, you never saw a raw speaker staring you in the face... what happened?

I'd rather think it was some deep, dark conspiracy... one day we'll find out!

I thought marketing was a deep, dark conspiracy to separate as many people as possible from their $?

I'd be more worried about your friends or siblings poking the tweeter, thats far more fragile.

My solution? A dead bolt lock on the room door!, and be picky about who you let in when you're there too.

speaking of grill covers........what the hell happened to all the urei 809 covers?

i think I've seen one set with them in my entire existence. i feel strongly that this non-covered speaker conspiracy movement had it's roots in the disappearance of all the urei 809 grill covers.

this thing might be bigger then we imagine.....

A grill is already built covering the tweeter on the HS80's lol... why couldn't they added some sort of optional grill like the krk vxt's...

indeed they may be. but when i hauled mine in the back of a u-haul for four hours of some of the nastiest pot holed, hilly roads I've encountered, i would have felt slightly better with them having covers.

I'm also surprised there isn't a company doing this. it seems there's at least a small business, made by order demand. like a company manufacturing these aside some other product.
