Motu 896 Headphone Amp routing help

The headphone jack on my motu 896 died. Don't have money to replace it, and don't want the hassle of buying/selling an interface, because I like it. I never use more than 6 inputs at one time, so i'm thinking a headphone amp plugged into the 7-8 inputs would solve this problem. However, would it be possible to monitor through headphones and my monitors at the same time? Tracking is done in the basement and my monitoring is upstairs.

This is probably a simple routing question but I have never used sends/buses much so I don't really know where to start. Thanks!

That was suggested to me by motu tech support, but on second thought that doesnt really make sense. Would this work if i plugged the headphone amp into the outputs of the inputs i wanted to wanted to monitor? guitar and bass for example.

get this from tech support..?

you could connect the motu outs 7-8 to your hp amp inputs,... I have a motu2408 that I use for hp-mixes too, outputs 1-8 go straight to 4 headphones, NO amp in beteween... I use cubase's CR-function and motu cuemix for 0 latency monitoring since I only use the motu for its connectivity (adat/tdif on pcie).

hahaha, i guess that sounds sketchy, i kind of passed off his idea as my own. it was a stupid one. but yeah, what you describe sounds like what i need to do. when i get to that stage i'll report back.

I've never used the original 896 (I've got the 896HD), but if it has the CueMix monitoring system, you can assign up to four separate monitor mixes to whichever output pair you choose. I suspect that tech support was suggesting using OUTPUTS 7-8 (not inputs 7-8) for your monitor mix.

Cuemix does not work with the 896 OG, which is why i'm having so many problems. I think i'm better off starting over with something more recent, like the profire 2626. It's not worth the trouble for a sound I know is achievable through other units.

Look at the Echo units while you're shopping. The Onyx Blackbird is worth a look too.

Yeah, i've been looking for a while now. I've heard nothing but bad things about the blackbird as far as compatability goes (i have a mac mini) and the audiofire looks awesome, but i wouldnt be able to use that as a standalone unit (xlr inputs).

I'm pretty much sold on the saffire pro 40. Two headphone outputs are a big plus. I'm going to plug in a headphone amp into one, any specific ones i should take a look at?

The AF Pre8 has 8 combination jacks. If you need something like RCA inputs, you can get cables cheap. It supports at least 4 stereo outs...

Can't speak to the Blackbird and Mac Mini.

For a headphone amp, there are lots out there. Rolls seems to be a good budget choice and Aphex looks to be super durable. People thing the Behringer units are just fine too.
