inputs fine on tascam US2000 but peak in reaper

Peak light response can vary. Your interface may be programmed to light when the signal averages -3db, where Reaper can be set light at 3 samples above 0, or something like that.

Have a look at the documentation, it may explain how peaking is treated.

Trust the DAW and back off with the level. You can peak at -20 and should still have plenty of level to work with

I have been trusting the DAW as i know i have read before that things might have a different peak level depending on what is being measured. I just couldn't find the reference i remembered reading.
