Adding 8 channels - saffire or 8pre?

Hey guys. I currently own a motu 8pre and am fairly pleased with the results I get from it. I want to add 8 channels to my set up and have a pretty limited budget. Initially I was thinking I would just get a second motu 8pre because they will be easily linked and I know what I'll be getting.

However, I've seen some pretty good reviews for the saffire, and I'm wondering if anyone who has used both can give me an idea if:

1. Will these two units be compatible via optical connection, using either/or as the main interface.

2. Is the saffire different enough from the 8pre to make getting it over the 8pre worth it. (different meaning better/different preamp characteristics, in and out options, ect).

Just looking for a little insight. Thanks in advance guys.

I own both the motu 8pre and Saffire. I hook the two together by using the focusrite as the interface and using optical cable made the motu the expander. I believe the Saffire can also serve as an expander if you use the motu as the interface.

On paper the features of the Saffire are better, however I would say the sound between the two units are relatively the same. Recently I did a session with around 12 inputs and I noticed the Saffire's dsp mix software freezes and crashes when daisy chained with my FireWire hard drive into my MacBook. I tried to chang the order in the chain to no avail. The motu drivers are phenomenal and have no issue daisy chaining a harddrive. I did however have a problem a while back with a noisy preamp, sometimes motu preamps malfunction and have to be sent to the factory for a repair.

Hopes this helps
