New songs, new mixes

Last 3days me and my band have been recording at our band-rehearsal facility.
This time we rented a "bunch" of mic's, borrowed a 24ch Presonus interface system and bought some really nice guitar amps right before we started.

Not every track is as tight as I had hoped they would be, mostly because of a lack of practicing on my side. I'm really struggling to find a place to practice drums. But we tried to make the best of it. No excuses

This particular song is called Brutal and is a pretty catchy one I guess.
Note I have not put a lot of effort into mixing it yet, no EQ's, just a little bit of compression on the vocals and bassguitar but that's it. But I think you'll get the idea of what we want to sound like.
There are a couple of other songs, and I'd like to post them and receive some critique on them. Please let me know what you think.

Seems like renting the pro gear payed off. But did you record to a click track? Sound like the drums were a bit rushed in places. You'll probably need to spend quite some time on the mix to make it sound pro but from what I'm hearing here it should be a fairly rewarding process.

Sounds very good for a rough mix.

The vocals seem a little distant, and the first verse sounded a little empty with the guitar panned off like that, but it's got some real potential.

Make sure you post the finished product

Oh, and what kind of microphones/amps were you using?

Thx .
No there where no click tracks. I would've loved to get the drums tighter, trust me, but frankly we ran out of time since we had to record the rest of the instruments aswell and we only had a day and a half left.

As far as equipment goes, it's not thát fancy at all, but compared to what we where using before it's a lot better.
Amps:
Blackstar HT5 head into Harley Benton 2×12inch (celestion Vintage30) cabinet
Reissue Fender Twin Reverb
We used a home made boosted pedal a lot for overdrive/distorded sounds.

Some mic's that we used where Beyer M201, Se Electronics X1, Oktava MK012, md421, sm57 but frankly on most of the guitartracks I seemed to prefer my Behringer C2 Which is basically also what you are hearing in the track above.

Interesting, I've had my eyes on Behringer C2. So what are the plans for the recording?

Well we're not signed or anything. They're just demo's, you know, for Facebook and Myspace. That sort of thing

The other two clips sound great IMO.

They have a 'dirty' sound but I think that works pretty well for the genre. Maybe bring the bass down a little bit in the first clip of the two.

Apart from that, good job

Thanks ZM!
I guess a "dirty" sound is what I was shooting for. Kind of like something what Albini would make it sound like, although obviously not quite.

I'm still working out the right balance for especially bass and vocals to make them "sit" nice.

Spend some more time mixing the first song. Starting to get together a bit more.

It's shaping up. I'd add a touch of reverb on vocals on and guitars. I feel the last chorus doesn't hit as hard as it should, some further gentle EQ and compressor should do it.

What would you use the compressor for?
I've only compressed the vocal and basstracks, no EQ's where used.
Slight reverb on vocals, could turn that up just a little bit indeed.

I'll admitt I'm putting on my producer hat when I say it should hit louder on the out chrorus. If you have a different vision feel free to tell me to **** off :D

Anyway, I'm thinking about something like a master buss compressor or limiter, fairly low threshold. Mostly to make that last chorus hit a bit harder but the mix as a whole will also hold together a bit better.

Not at all, I'm just trying to understand how one would use a compressor to actually increase the impact of a certain section of a song. I appreciate your feedback a lot :D

Maybe someone can weigh in on this, my mind is blank on how I set a master buss comp last time. :/

Another possibility is to let the volume of the track roll of a bit every verse, about 2dB or so. And then bump up the volume back to normal at the chorus for extra kick. A while ago I read an interview with butch Vig, where he says that sometimes he uses this trick, I could give it a shot while I'm at it.

Here's another one of our songs. I have a thing for panning the two guitars pretty much hard left and right. Not sure if it's working out in this track. (although they aren't 100% panned hard l/r)

And yes I'm very much aware of the slow-downs in the drums

Oh yeah, note the vocals on this one where recorded in the bathroom :D

Here are the mixes, they are as "final" as they get. Although I will always hear shit I want to improve on. Oh well.
